Happy Holidays from Fedora Mentors!
by Patrick W. Barnes
Happy Holidays from the Fedora Mentors team! We want to bring in the
new year with the Fedora Project in an awesome way. We want to boost
the Fedora contributor base just in time to help us shove Fedora Core 5
out the door. Here is the Fedora Mentors New Year's Challenge:
Fedora Fans (end-users):
So you've enjoyed using Fedora, or have had a little trouble and gotten
help from the Fedora Community, but have you ever thought about how you
can make a significant contribution to this great project? You might be
surprised as to just how many ways there are for you to contribute. Our
challenge for you is simple: get started as a Fedora contributor. As a
subscriber to this list, you've already taken the first steps. The
Fedora Mentors program is here to help you go the rest of the way! For
starters, visit our HelpWanted[1] page to get some ideas as to how you
can help us. Once you know what you want to do, you can visit the
Fedora Mentors home[2] to learn how you can get guidance for every step
of you journey with Fedora. Complete this challenge and be part of
something grand!
Fedora Contributors:
Thanks for helping us out. We're glad to have every contributor as part
of the team. That said, we can never have enough people helping to
drive Fedora forward. That is why our challenge for you is to select
someone and help them join the Fedora Project as a contributor. It
doesn't matter who you select; it can be someone in one of Fedora's
end-user channels, a friend, family member, or someone in your community
who is curious about open source and Fedora. All you have to do is help
them to see just how they can make a difference in our project. Help to
guide them in selecting a Fedora project to work with. Help them
establish first contact, and help them through their first tasks to
become a contributor. You've been through this process yourself, so you
shouldn't have any trouble guiding them in getting started. If you need
any help, we're here to back you up! Stop on by the Fedora Mentors
home[2] for information on how we can help you or your new contributor
with whatever questions you might have. If this seems like a program
you think you can help out with, join us! We would be happy to welcome
new Fedora Mentors, and you can easily be a mentor without it
interfering with your other Fedora contributions. It's easy work!
Complete this challenge and you can be truly proud of your
accomplishments with the Fedora Project!

unicode characters
by darrell pfeifer
(This is a resend...sorry if you see it twice but the original version
didn't seem to be on the list after two hours)
I am running the latest rawhide. Sometime in the last several days
some of my unicode characters have started appearing as the
"unrecognized" empty square (I don't know what it is officially
called).
This is true for www.chinesepod.com, which is mostly in English but
has a few Chinese symbols. It is also happens in Eclipse with Java
source code, mostly before and after the double quote character. I'm
using the non-gcj version of Eclipse. The file appears normally using
kwrite.
My language settings have been UTF-8 for a long time. I've seen this
happen once before and it seemed to correct itself with font updates.
Any suggestions on where to look?
thanks

Fedora Core 5 Test 2 slipping until January 16
by Jesse Keating
<to be sung to the tune of Jingle Bells>
Dashing through the builds
In a one cup holder desk
O're the build errors we go
Swearing all the way!
Phones on dev's desks ring
Making Managers frown
What fun it is to cuss and swear
re-baseing on GCC!
Oh, software sucks,
Software sucks,
Software really sucks!
Oh what fun it is to slip our release for a month!
Software sucks,
Software sucks,
Software really sucks!
Oh, what fun it is to slip our release for a month!
We rebuilt java* once
It wasn't very nice
we rebuilt everything else
to our user's delight!
Broken deps still there
Making testing fun
We really thing we need to test
for another month!
Oh, software sucks,
Software sucks,
Software really sucks!
Oh what fun it is to slip our release for a month!
Oh What Fun It Is To Slip Our Release For A Monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnth!!!
Ok, it won't be a full month, but due to the recent upgrade of gcc and
the subsequent full rebuild of everything that does (and doesn't,
whoops!) get built with gcc, including java stuff with gcj, and the need
to further test package selection windows in Anaconda,
system-config-packages for upgrades, and the development tree in general
once we settle down the rebuilds, we have decided to delay test2. Here
is a new schedule that we will be working toward:
* Test2 freeze date to 9 January
* Test2 release, 16 January
* Test3 freeze, 6 February
* Test3 release, 13 February
* Final absolute freeze, 6 March
* Release, 15 March
We are going to try very hard to have a stable(ish) tree suitable for
testing over the holidays, so that Test2 will be better for the slip and
keep us in line with getting Test3 and eventually the final release out
in the best shape possible.
Thank you all for your hard work in helping us develop the best
distribution we can!

Mesa-6.4.1 now available for Fedora devel
by Mike A. Harris
Mesa-6.4.1 is now available, which requires libdrm-2.0. Dependencies
should be correct for them, however if you have any troubles, make
sure you have the two as a pair, as trying to use old libdrm with new
mesa or old mesa with new libdrm will not work.
There will be a new X11R7 RC4 X server soon, along with all of the
RC4 drivers as well. The rest of the RC4 packages not already in
rawhide will hopefully all be built today, and end up in tomorrow's
rawhide push.

libusual and ub
by Pete Zaitcev
Hi, Dave, Jeremy, and others:
I think now may be the time to enable ub in Rawhide and see if it sticks.
The problem it is trying to address is to have fewer oopses and/or lockups
related to the usb-storage. I have to say, I do not see all that many
these days, but when they do happen, it always happens as if on purpose
to break our schedule.
Since ub does not support all storage devices, and never will, I developed
a way for it to coexist with usb-storage. A patch called "libusual"
provides the necessary routing. It is attached at the bottom of this
message, and I think is necessary if we are to have ub at all.
In order to reap the benefit of ub, I consider it desirable to make
it default in libusual. This is, of course, risky. But if we do not
do it, Anaconda will be the only user, and it's a hell to debug
anything in the installation environment. I would rather have users
to poke at ub without installations first, by pulling kernels with yum.
To that end, the patch below defaults to ub. This is NOT how it is
done upstream.
Speaking of upstream, libusual is in Greg Kroah's tree, on its way
to AKPM, and is pretty far from Linus tree. Fedora is to test it
ahead of time, in my plan. I would like to ask if you guys are good
with it. We are in Rawhide, and just coming up to Test 1, after all.
I reckoned it appropriate to give a kind of technology preview.

qt4 have been back ported for qt3 see http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/1687
i would ask that anyone interested in seeing this go in please make a comment
in the bug to show support and interest

unicode characters
by darrell pfeifer
Any suggestions on where to look?
thanks
darrell
