YUM repository precedence RFE
by Lamont R. Peterson
All,
I'm suggesting an enhancement to yum so that one could configure "priorities"
or a "precedence" (preference) order for multiple repositories. For example,
I could say that I want packages from repo Y to be used even if there are
newer versions in repo X.
This would allow one to build customized repos that only contain the small
subset of packages that need customization, even if those packages exist in
the base repo, Fedora Extras, Dag, etc. I think that this will make it
easier to deal with building and maintaining local-use mirrors, like I have
at home, as well as other more widely used mirrors (like kde-redhat, for
example).
The implementation should be very simple. If the "precedence" variable exists
in the .repo file, use that number to sort out which repo's packages to use
in cases where there is duplication.
Thoughts?

"yum --partial" feature as a bash line
by cybernet@interia.pl
Since the yum "bug" topic flooded the mailing list, this is a new post.
A few days ago someone proposed a "yum --partial" feature in order to
have partial updates instead of no updates - e.g if eclipse is broken,
then why shouldn't httpd get updated?
Heres a quick "answer" :
# get a list of items
# remove 4 lines from top (tac/head/tac)
# try to update one item at a time
for k in `yum list updates | awk '{ print $1 }' | tac | head -n-4 |
tac`; do yum -y update
$k; done
Obviously this isn't too nice, but if someone has a better idea, this
would allow fedora devel/test users to make automatic partial updates
when dependencies are broken (quite often with the devel repositories).
I don't expect a feature like this to be implemented in yum, since in
the real world, we don't have broken dependencies (theoretically). Or
should I write a yum plugin ... ?

How to update from FC4 to RawHide
by William Lovaton
Hello there,
I'm trying to update to RawHide from an up to date FC4
system. I got this conflicts:
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package initscripts needs kernel < 2.6.12, this
is not available.
Error: Package kudzu needs kernel < 2.6.13, this is
not available.
How can I fix this? I guess this is due to the latest
updates in rawhide.
BTW, what is the best way to install rawhide?
Thanx,
-William

yum scriptlet exit status 255 when su-ed to root (with selinux)
by Hans de Goede
Hi All,
With the latest rawhide I get a lot of:
error: %preun(kernel-2.6.13-1.1594_FC5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
error: %pre(kernel-2.6.14-1.1771_FC5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping
kernel-2.6.14-1.1771_FC5
error: %preun(kernel-2.6.14-1.1770_FC5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
error: %preun(kernel-2.6.14-1.1743_FC5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
error: %preun(kernel-2.6.14-1.1644_FC5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit
status 255
This is when running yum -y update kernel as root. I became root by
doing su - in an xterm started as a normal user.
Running yum when directly logged in as root from the console works fine.
Bugzilla?

Hans

Re: yum downloads need revamping
by Mike C
Jeff Spaleta wrote:
As much as I hate agreeing with Steenholdt.. and let me assure you i
hate having to do it it... i have to agree with him on this, because
of the way the language packages for openoffice are packaged you can't
avoid updating the langpacks at all.
The way I have been using openoffice is to do a "yum remove
openoffice.org-langpack*"
and since I am only in need of English this saves a huge set of downloads
whenever openoffice is updated.
Hence this one command helps a lot for future updates.
Of course if you needed a specific langauge support then you could follow
the above with
yum install openoffice.org-langpack-he_IL
or whatever you need - this is still a great saving in dowload time/space
and update time/space compared to leaving everything in your system even if
you don;t need it.
Hence even if everything else is downloaded at install you can make
the above change and still be efficient for updates.
Jeff has already hinted at this in a previous posting on this topic.
A similar trick can be played concerning kde-i18n-* again in my case I
keep kde-i18n-British but remove the other language support rpms via
yum remove.
I would imagine that most people would need only 1 or possibly a few
language support files on any single machine?

Fedora Core 5 Test 2 slipping until January 16
by Mike C
Thanks for sweetening the news with the fun lyrics!
Either way for what its worth, I would rather a little extra time be
taken to get
these releases working well rather than rushing to push out something
on time which had
serious bugs remaining to cause significant problems -
In the end the system will be cutting edge but also a very fine
operating system.
Best wishes
Mike

Making testing fun
We really thing we need to test
for another month!
Oh, software sucks,
Software sucks,
Software really sucks!
Oh what fun it is to slip our release for a month!
Oh What Fun It Is To Slip Our Release For A Monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnth!!!
Ok, it won't be a full month, but due to the recent upgrade of gcc and
the subsequent full rebuild of everything that does (and doesn't,
whoops!) get built with gcc, including java stuff with gcj, and the need
to further test package selection windows in Anaconda,
system-config-packages for upgrades, and the development tree in general
once we settle down the rebuilds, we have decided to delay test2. Here
is a new schedule that we will be working toward:
* Test2 freeze date to 9 January
* Test2 release, 16 January
* Test3 freeze, 6 February
* Test3 release, 13 February
* Final absolute freeze, 6 March
* Release, 15 March
We are going to try very hard to have a stable(ish) tree suitable for
testing over the holidays, so that Test2 will be better for the slip and
keep us in line with getting Test3 and eventually the final release out
in the best shape possible.
Thank you all for your hard work in helping us develop the best
distribution we can!

OO x86_64 status?
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
What are the chances of having a fully 64bit Open-Office ready for FC5
release?
Does anyone know if the OO.org team managed to stabilize the 64bit
builds?
Thanks,
Gilboa
