Closing bugs UPSTREAM
by Leonard den Ottolander
Hello,
I would like to know what the policy about closing bugs UPSTREAM is. I
feel resolving bugs as UPSTREAM might not be the correct approach if the
bug will be fixed in an update. Also there is the danger of it being
abused as an easy way out. More appropriate would be to close a bug as
UPSTREAM if it can not be addressed locally. Bugs for which upstream
fixes are applied are more appropriately closed CURRENTRELEASE as soon
as the update is made available.
An example of this is
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=114498 . This bug
will be fixed locally with the next update of gnome-panel. Thus I feel
it should be closed CURRENTRELEASE at the release of the update, and not
UPSTREAM.
A good example of closing UPSTREAM might be
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=112469 as this
issue has *not* yet been solved upstream, and thus can not be addressed
locally (I changed my mind on that one ;) .
Leonard.

RFC: Tripwire name change
by Keith G. Robertson-Turner
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
As the package maintainer for Tripwire, I have stumbled onto a
(seemingly) insoluble problem, which can only be addressed by changing
the package name of Tripwire from "tripwire" to "Tripwire".
Rather than repeat the whole story verbatim, I simply refer you to the
original RFC on bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.fedora.us/show_bug.cgi?id=1308
Comments welcome.
Regards,
Keith G. Robertson-Turner

Problems with nfs
by Leon Kanter
I'm unable to mount my rh7.3-based nfs server from fc2 box. There are
two lines in messages on nfs server:
rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from xxx.xxx.com.ua:922 for /md1
(/md1)
rpc.mountd: getfh failed: Operation not permitted
If I try to mount this resource from any box with kernel 2.4 - it's ok.
How can I mount it from 2.6 box?

* Fri Feb 20 2004 Tom Lane <tgl(a)redhat.com>
- reinstate (and update) patch for /usr/lib64 compatibility
- rebuilt
* Fri Feb 13 2004 Elliot Lee <sopwith(a)redhat.com>
- rebuilt
* Tue Nov 25 2003 Patrick Macdonald <patrickm(a)redhat.com> 0.9.2-1
- update to 0.9.2
- remove patches (no longer applicable)
XFree86-4.3.0-59
----------------
* Thu Feb 19 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-59
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-xrandr-manpage-typo-fix.patch to fix manpage (#83702)
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-radeon-9200-dvi-snow.patch to fix issue on Radeon 9200
when using DVI panel and encountering snow and other artifacts (#112073)
- Updated XFree86-4.3.0-debug-logging-ioport-based-rate-setting.patch to have
it patch both lnx_kbd.c and lnx_io.c because both files insanely contain
identical cut and pasted copies of the exact same source code, so nothing
shows up in the X server log when testing with previous patch as the calls
never got invoked in lnx_kbd.c (#115769)
* Wed Feb 18 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-58
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-debug-logging-ioport-based-rate-setting.patch to get
some useful debugging information as to why the X server seems to be unable
to use the KDKBDREP ioctl(), and is falling back to direct I/O port bashing,
which causes problems in the kernel (#115769)
- Removed /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
from the default xfs font path, as /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled is
present by default, which is what we want, and the cyrillic one gets added
automatically if cyrillic fonts get installed.
- Updated libXrender to the version 0.8.4 maintenance release, which fixes a
problem in 0.8.3 that caused antialiased fonts to be inadvertently disabled
in KDE (#109351)
- Updated libXft to version 2.1.3 from freedesktop.org xlibs, and enabled it
for build_rawhide and build_psyche just for testing purposes for now.
- Conditionalize the patches XFree86-4.3.0-fixes-for-freetype-2.1.7-v2.patch,
and XFree86-4.3.0-redhat-xft-loadtarget.patch to only be applied when
with_new_xft is 0, as it is not needed for Xft 2.1.3
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-SDK-add-missing-includes-for-synaptics.patch from
Paul Nasrat, to fix the SDK so that 3rd party drivers such as "synaptics"
can be built in external rpm packages (#99351,103498,114804)
- Comment out host.def supported driver list for alpha architecture, and just
build the default drivers, as we no longer have official Alpha products, so
there is no reason to restrict driver support to hardware that works or is
reasonably considered to work. Ship it all and see what breaks.
- Disabled tdfx driver DRI support in Fedora Core development, as we have
at least temporarily deprecated Glide3 due to it no longer compiling
properly. Alan was working on fixing this, so we will probably re-enable
tdfx DRI support once Glide3 is working again.
- Removed XFree86-4.3.0-fixes-for-freetype-2.1.7-v2.patch and replaced it
with XFree86-4.3.0-general-fixes-for-freetype-2.1.7.patch which excludes
Xft2 fixups, and XFree86-4.3.0-xft-2.1.2-fixes-for-freetype-2.1.7.patch
which includes only Xft2 fixups needed for xft-2.1.2, as 2.1.3 includes
this fix already

Mouse related issue
by Alan
I have a ps/2 scroll mouse and a kvm. If I switch to another session to
do something, is screws up the mouse quite bad.
In Redhat 9 I would just bring up the redhat mouse configure app and it
would reset the mouse. That does not work in Fedora any more.
What is the correct way to reset the mouse? I want to write an app that
I can bind to a keypress in X.
Also, is there going to be a config app to change mouse cursors in
Gnome?

Thoughts on how to structure the release notes...
by Edward C. Bailey
Hello all,
A while ago, I broached the subject of release notes quality on
fedora-list. and asked for feedback on ways to make the release notes
better. One of the subjects mentioned was to make the content more
accessible by splitting things up a bit more, possibly by using RPM's
package groups.
I personally liked the concept behind that idea, though I thought using
more newbie-friendly groups might be a better choice. Since the package
groups used by Anaconda are a bit easier to understand, I thought it would
be better to use the groups defined by the comps.xml file.
My plan (for Fedora Core 2 Test 2) is to structure the release notes to
use the following list of groups. That doesn't mean every one of these
groups will be present in the release notes -- only that, if something
needs to be said about a given package, that content will be put in the
release notes, under a heading reflecting that package's group.
For example, if I need to write something about emacs, it'll appear
under the "Emacs" heading. On the other hand, if nothing needs to be
written about emacs, the "Emacs" heading will not be present in the release
notes.
Here are some of the groups that are currently used in Fedora Core 2 Test
1:
Administration Tools
Authoring and Publishing
Base
Compatibility Arch Development Support
Compatibility Arch Support
Core
DNS Name Server
Development Libraries
Development Tools
Dialup Networking Support
Editors
Emacs
Engineering and Scientific
FTP Server
GNOME Desktop Environment
GNOME Software Development
Games and Entertainment
Graphical Internet
Graphics
KDE Desktop Environment
KDE Software Development
Kernel Development
Legacy Software Development
Mail Server

Office/Productivity
Printing Support
Ruby
SQL Database Server
Server Configuration Tools
Sound and Video
Supported Packages
System Tools
Text-based Internet
Web Server
Windows File Server
X Software Development
X Window System
XEmacs
These are not the only groups; there are also groups that relate to the
support of various languages. There are quite a few, and given that I
doubt there would be much that needs to be written about them, I feel that
it would be easier to compress them into a single "Internationalization
Support" heading. Here are the groups:
Arabic Support
Assamese Support
Bengali Support
Brazilian Support
British Support
Catalan Support
Chinese Support
Cyrillic Support
Czech Support
Danish Support
Dutch Support
Estonian Support
Finnish Support
French Support
German Support
Greek Support
Hebrew Support
Hungarian Support
ISO8859-2 Support
ISO8859-9 Support
Italian Support
Japanese Support
Korean Support
Norwegian Support
Polish Support
Portuguese Support
Romanian Support
Russian Support
Serbian Support
Slovak Support
Slovenian Support
Spanish Support
Swedish Support
Turkish Support
Ukrainian Support
Hmmm. Of course, if there's not much of a chance that there will be a lot
of content for packages under these groups, maybe it doesn't matter, and if
something noteworthy about the kde-i18n-Hungarian package needs to be said,
perhaps it should be said under the "Hungarian Support" heading... :-)
In any case, what does everyone think? Is this a good change, a bad
change, or just a change?
