yum ignore?
by Josh Boyer
Is there a way to tell yum to ignore specific packages when doing an update?
I am thinking something like:
yum update --ignore foo*
which would be the equivalent of unchecking a package in the up2date GUI.
This would be useful when there are lots of updates available, but one or two
have dependencies that can't be resolved. Didn't see anything in the man
page though...

Do they have any _real_ benchmark telling the diffrence ?
Note that comparing say FC1 directly with an optimized Gentoo
is not a real benchmark, its probably not the same kernel with
the same features. Diffrent version of lots-of-things.
It's also interresting to find where the diffrence is.
e.g. Gentoo have some kernel features enabled which is what
makes the diffrence, you cannot say optimizing everything is
what made Evolution a bit quicker.
Or comparing a grep that's dog slow cause the user local is UTF-8
vs a locale of C..
Also beware of the placebo effect. Tell a user that this'n'that is much
better/faster, and he thinks so.

Testers Required for Next Generation Input Method
by Lawrence Lim
The Fedora Project will be adopting a revolutionary new Input Method
system in the upcoming release of the Fedora Core 2. We would like to
extend an invitation at this time to East Asian users in particular to
test this preliminary release and provide us with feedback so we can
improve the software and ensure that the Input Methods will be easier,
more efficient and pleasant to use.
Intranet/Internet Input Method Framework (IIIMF) is the next generation
Input Method Framework set to replace the legacy X Window System Input
Method (XIM) used by existing Input Methods such as chinput, xcin,
kinput2, ami and many others. As the technology is still at its infancy,
wider testing effort by community is needed to expediate the maturity of
the technology.
IIIMF server loads Language Engines (LE) dynamically at runtime as
requested by clients. In this first round of testing, four LEs are
available:
+ iiimf-le-inpinyin for Simplified Chinese (zh_CN.UTF-8)
+ iiimf-le-xcin for Traditional Chinese (zh_TW.UTF-8)
+ iiimf-le-canna for Japanese (ja_JP.UTF-8)
+ iiimf-le-hangul for Korean (ko_KR.UTF-8)
If you wish to participate in this first round of testing, a Testing Guide
is now available at <URL>. It will give you the necessary information in
setting up the IIIMF and using the LE specific to your locale.

I can confirm that not even the root user can run vmware with 2.6.1x
kernel. My kernel was built from the 2.6.1-1.37 SRC rpm.
Is this a Fedora problem or a vmware problem?
Cheers

DRAFT - Remote Conversion to Linux Software RAID-1 for Crazy Sysadmins HOWTO

Remote Conversion to Linux Software RAID-1 for Crazy Sysadmins HOWTO
Have you ever wanted to convert a remote system where you have only SSH
access from a single disk and identical blank disk, to Linux software
RAID-1? Well I had to do it twice late December. After a few disasters
I managed to figure out this procedure. It worked great on RH9 and FC1,
but for some reason I don't understand it failed on RHEL3.
Any suggestions for improving the procedure or the mdadm manual start on
RHEL3 failed would be appreciated.
Yeah this isn't really Fedora related...

Premptible kernel
by Peter Backlund
If I remember correctly, preemption isn't enabled in the kernel due to
problems with SMP. Is that still true? If so, would it be possible to
build the UP kernel with preemption enabled?
