Check 'rpm -ql hplip' did you try "/etc/init.d/hplip [re]start" then
"/etc/init.d/cups restart"

Ok, tested last night, it works. What i did:
- installing hplip, hplip-devel and libsane-hpaio
- starting hplip using /sbin/service hplip start
- restart cups for printing well
...and scan, scan, scan...
btw. sane-find-scanner still won't find the scanner, whilst scanning from
xsane and the gimp will work well.
Definitively, libsane-hpaio should be a dependendy of sane!
