It sounds like you do not have the OSS emulation layer loaded. I think
this is covered in the ALSA docs. (Sorry, but I can not give the
specific modules to load right now - not on my FC6 machine.)

I think the OP needs the alsa-oss package installed. This was not initially
available on FC5, but as I use planetccrma I get it from them. I now see that
alsa-oss is available on FC5, and presume this may be the same on FC6.
