But in rescue mode /var/lib doesn't even exist. So an rpm -vv
--rebuilddb cannot create its scratch files on a hardcoded /var/lib/
If you boot the install CD with 'linux rescue' at the prompt it
should detect and mount your installed system under /mnt/sysinstall
and suggest a chroot command for you to make repairs. After
the chroot you should see your /var/lib in it's usual place.
