A software suspend patch *is* in upstream
kernel.org kernels. It's just not
turned on for Fedora builds.
And for those on the list who are interested, I found RPMs and SRPMs of
the Fedora kernels with swsusp enabled at

recompiling the latest with the ALPS touchpad patch as we speak.
