Well, it seems that the slick-greeter has no ability to offer and manage
language selection. Then the solution is use LightDM GTK Greeter (package
lightdm-gtk).
Perhaps easiest way to switch from slick-greeter to lightdm-gtk is
uninstall slick-greeter package (and install lightdm-gtk - if it was not
already installed /they could be both installed/).
Or, if for some reason we want to have both installed and use lightdm-gtk
as the default, we can copy:
# cp -a /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/60-lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/
Then this setting should also survive any updates to both these packages.
