Well, after 6 years, you haven't made me a KDE convert yet! :)
I'm mostly a Gnome user.
For GNOME it is almost as simple.
If the directory doesn't already exist....
mkdir ~/.config/autostart
Then create a file called something like ksysguard.desktop in that directory with the
following contents.
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Ksysguard
GenericName=Watch
Exec=ksysguard
Terminal=false
Type=Application
And you're done.
ksysguard will start the next time you login.
