Checking, every one of the icons on my desktop except for shortcuts
to folders is put there by a file in /home/Desktop.
Are you using a desktop environment that pretends it's like a
touchscreen tablet? Where instead of menus, all applications get an
icon thrown onto a screen(s) that you have to shuffle through to find.
