I've justed grabed blender-2.56a from [1], it work well on f14 x86_64,
maybe you're using Python3 (instead of 2.7)

Probably Python 3 is the culprit, but I guess you can somehow specify
Blender to use Python 2.7, right? But I don't know how :( Maybe
somebody else can help with this?
