sorry, ctl-alt-f1 ???

other key that does anything is the "Enter" key and that takes me back to
where I was entering root as a user id.
Pressing Alt f2 does absolutely nothing.
I last installed Fedora 9 on this box, many years ago and I didn't seem to
have any problems until one of the hard drives went bad.
Is there anything else I can try?

sure, just do the ctl-f1, login as root, use the user_add cli to create
your non-root user.
