If evtest isn't showing you any other events then most likely your mouse
is broken. Any events coming in on the USB port should be showing up
there. The only other alternative is a pretty serious kernel bug. Can
you try the mouse on another computer? Do you have another USB mouse to
try on this one?

just bought a new one, which works perfectly.
