The serial port device should be owned by root, and belong to the
dialout group, with both the owner and the group having read and write
permissions. You can verify this like this:
Note if you are using F16 there is a glibc bug affecting group permission.
(I have a problem with nut not showing up in the dialout group even though
it is in that group.) Currently there is a glibc update in testing that
fixes that issue but breaks other things. So it probably won't get pushed
to updates/stable right away.
