Had the same problem.
You need to completely disable selinux. There's something
about it that
VMware Server 1.x and 2.x both do not like. Putting selinux
into
permissive mode is NOT enough, btw. YOu actually need to
disable it.

Thanks, In fact I have selinux disabled and added port 8222 and 8333
for this purpose too.
the problem still exists
You also need to make sure you have ports 902 and 904 open. These are
used by the console. The way I got this working was to open all 4 ports
for both TCP and UDP.
