I take it the official way to enter a euro symbol in vi/vim is
AltGr+4.
I find this works about 20% of the time.
It usually works if it is the first character entered.
But most of the time it does not work - I just get a "4".
Thank you all for your advice, which has taught me a lot.
But I'm ashamed to admit that I found the cause of my problem -
after going back to basics and re-discovering xev and showkey -
lay in a dirty AltGr key on my Thinkpad T60,
which only responded when struck hard in the top right-hand corner.
If it had been any other key (except perhaps for the 2 Windows keys)
I would have noticed; but I don't think I have ever pressed AltGr
except when trying to print the € symbol.
I trust I have managed to cure the fault after lifting the key
and applying compressed air and contact cleaner.
