This happened to me once or twice. I had to take care of what USB ports
on my laptop are safe or not, with regards to either the delivered
power or to reliability in general towards some hardware.
I think someone else mentioned powered USB hubs and I highly recommend
those. For anything requiring significant power (hard drives, external
CD/DVD drives, etc.) I always use a powered hub. The only things that
get plugged in directly are things like network dongles and what
essentially amount to thumb drives (e.g. cell phones where I'm just
moving data to/from them and not recharging).
