Scenario:
Your mother downloaded a few audio tracks and a few video music videos
from the same author. How can she know which is which? Click through
all of them? I would get pissed :)
A better fix would be to do more then look at the extension, and
display an icon based on the mime type. That way, even if the file
gets saved with the wrong extension, it still shows up as the
correct file type. This has an added benefit because a file will
show the correct icon even if the extension is wrong, or hidden.
