What about other PDF rendering applications?
You would have to ask that question and screw things up.... :-)
okular also exhibits the same failure. The dreaded acroread does not. xpdf also does not
exhibit a failure.
lsof shows xpdf using
/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/s050000l.pfb and
/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/n021003l.pfb
While acroread appears to be using only /usr/share/fonts/dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf
This is on F19.
