There's a script run at boot that defines alias's for all of the
standard colors so that you can just use WHITE, RED or DODGERBLUE
instead of the hex codes. Despite that, the script that assigns
different colors to the output of ls depending on the options uses the
hex codes, as if whoever wrote the script was trying to be as obscure as
possible.
