I think that *should* work if pre-configuration to allow hibernation to
work had been made before the initrd was generated. But if you'd
changed things to try and arrange hibernation *after* then, it
wouldn't.
There was also the issue of what the system would do if there was
multiple possibilities, such as several swap partitions. Setting a
manual parameter would take chance out of the equation.
