This is why LVM was invented a long time ago, you would do this online
with minimal disruption if you want to maintain the filesystem as is
(that may or may not be your case).
I've always hated LVM, but that isn't why I didn't use it here. Mostly
because it was/is very difficult to use with mdadm.
There were eight slots for disks, and all eight slots were filled with
240GB SSDs. This was actually already upgraded from four 240GB about
five years ago.
