The *best* way to install mplayer is to use the packages from RPM fusion.
I'm assuming you are running Fedora 27.
Download the following 2 files....
https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-27.noa...
https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-...
Then do....
sudo dnf install rpmfusion-free-release-27.noarch.rpm
rpmfusion-nonfree-release-27.noarch.rpm
This will install the RPMfusion repos on your system. After that, you can do
sudo dnf install mplayer
Forget about the MPlayer-1.3.0.tar.xz you have downloaded. This would require you to
compile and install manually. Not a very good idea for most novice users as it won't
get updated when bugs are found.
