I formatted the USB drive for vfat and -- supprise -- it is mountable
rw. So I convlude that it is the iso9660 that's the couse of the
problem. It is new media. Same thing with a micro SD.

Is the USB media new or previously used?
mediawriter is going to reformat the USB media, so why not try
removing existing partitions with Gnome DIsks and maybe creating new
partitions and filesystem.
