I appreciate all who replied, I have come to the conclusion that the
dvd/cdrw drive is defective. I reinstalled fedora and made it dual
boot with windows98se. I have installed every piece of software that
ibm has on the support page and when I try to burn a cd it tells me
that the drive does not have write capabilities.
Jeff, the software that you mentioned is completely installed on my
linux system and still no dvd, I can mount a cd of any kind, but when
I insert any dvd the drive light just flashes indefinitly and if I
type mount /media/cdrom the following errors appear in the tail of
dmesg:
hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: packet command error: error=0x54
ide: failed opcode was 100
cdrom: open failed.
I am going to contact the seller and get a replacement dvd/cdrw drive.
I mean if I insert a bootable fedora 4 dvd (one I know is good, I
have installed about 30 systems from it) the drive light just flashes
and if I choose it through F12 boot menu the system will just default
to the harddrive.
I had hoped my suggestion was the quick fix.
I occasionally see similar errors to yours above, but that often occurs
when there is no disk in the drive and I try to access it.
Guess It was not the fix, and good luck with getting the drive
replacement.
