Hi Ed,
The f25 to f26 upgrade was done using the instructions here:
The boot that seemed to fail (or never finish) was the one that should happen
automatically at the end of step 7. I waited for that boot to finish over 15 minutes
after the 3 rectangles disappeared before doing the hard reset. The screen was blank
that
whole time.
Question: When during the upgrade process does the building of the nvidia drivers happen?
(I would have guessed that it happens during the long process triggered by my dnf
command
in step 6, but before the automatic reboot that occurs at the end of step 7 (after
thousands of installing, clean-up, and verifying messages).
If I remember correctly, and that is a big if, the process that builds the new drivers is
kicked off between the "clean-up" and "verify" phase of the dnf
process.
The problem is if the clean-up process lasts too long and the verify process doesn't
complete by the time akmod tries to install the new rpm it built it is locked out and
fails. This can also happen during a normal update if a large number of packages and a
new kernel are being updated.
Question: How long should I have waited?
There is no set time since it is a variable depending on CPU and disk performance.
After an upgrade I am often left with a blinking cursor. I just walk away and come back
later to find the login screen.
When, if, you find yourself in the same situation you should just bring up a console and
check the log file to see what is happening.
Question: I did not run dnf after 2200. Who or what did? (not a complaint; rather,
I'm curious)
But when did you reboot? akmod will check for a working nVidia driver on each boot.
2017/10/19 14:36:16 akmods: Could not install newly built RPMs. You
can find them and the
logfile
The above indicated that the rpm was built, but could not be installed. Most likely due
to the dnf command still having the rpm database locked.
(Odd that I don't get messages you post here....but I get my response via email that I
post on hyperkitty) Oh, well.
