Well, if I do as you say it fails for me in the same way as it fails for Patrick.
If I use the format I show, it works just fine.
FWIW, my server is on a KDE based system.
vncviewer euripide:1 -via localhost
works as badly as
vncviewer -via pdupre@euripide:1
