Sounds somewhat like this bug which went away for me when I
installed an nvidia card and no longer used the motherboard's
intel graphics support:

Thanks for the pointer. My bug seems to be a bit more, uhm, extreme
than yours (whole bloody windows flashing, cursors bouncing back and
forth...no pointer trails though), but that was the next step...putting
in an nVidia card.
Actually, the machine I'm writing this on has an nVidia in it (for Cuda
development), although I'm using the Intel video right now:
