I tried both vlc and dragon on a test file. played a minute or
so and
then just stopped. Dragon played nothing.
Mplayer complains (but not about codecs) and stops:

You should add the "-playlist" option to mplayer
That worked, thanks. The original error message from mplayer is
spectacularly obscure.
