Maybe your monitor won't do that resolution.
I found the same thing and research showed my monitor is limited to a
lower resolution, Xconfig detects it and refuses change.

No, that isn't the case. When I logon I'm at 1280x1024. Then I run
nvidia-settings (nVidia Display Settings on the gnome System Tools menu)
and go to the "X Server Display Configuration" entry which identifies my
monitor correctly (ViewSonic VG2030wm). The Resolution drop-down menu
offers a long list, from 320x240 up to 1680x1050. I select 1680x1050 and
my screen resolution changes. The problem, as I've said, is that when I
reboot the resolution goes back to 1280x1024.
