You may have a crashing screensaver, you've described that situation to
a tee. The usual approach was to try disabling some screensavers; or
turning off the choose random option, and only using one that you've
never seen crash.
It's the most plain vanilla screensaver for KDE; there's not even an
entry for Screensaver in System Settings. It's dark blue with a
digital clock at the top, then a place for a picture of m, then a box
to enter a password.
