Same here on a brand new Acer 5720.
Sound is not working, SD is not read,....what else??? ah, check other
thread about USB ports.
Send your lspci output for your sound device, I may be able to help.
Mine does not work out of box neither, but it's working now after some
changes in /etc/modprobe.conf.
