i also don't think X.org would be able to load (and unload) the driver
without it being installed (as logged in the Xorg.0.log below)

OK now I think we may be on to something. sounds to me like the
driver
may not
be on your system.
as root issue this command:
rpm -qa syn*
You sould see this package:
synaptics-0.13.5-5
if you dont have that package install it from off of your CD's.
