[Now Playing] Intel Open CL Test Day
by Sumantro Mukherjee
Hey All,
We're hosting an Intel OpenCL Test Day[0] and we need your expertise!
Join us on 2024-04-09 to put Intel's OpenCL through its paces. Your
feedback will be invaluable in shaping the future of this technology.
Together, let's push the boundaries of performance and innovation.
Intel's OpenCL (Open Computing Language) is a powerful framework for
parallel computing across CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. It enables developers
to harness the full potential of Intel's hardware, optimizing
performance for a wide range of applications from AI and machine
learning to high-performance computing. By participating in our test
day, you'll gain hands-on experience and contribute directly to the
enhancement of Intel's OpenCL platform for Fedora 40.

planning for upgrade.
by home user
Good morning,
I have a stand-alone 2013 workstation (11 years old). It's dual-boot; the other OS is windows-7.
I'm planning to upgrade from f-38 to f-39 in a few days. I've had hard drive space issues before. So I'd like to know how to determine in advance if I have enough hard drive space for the upgrade. Output from "df" and "ls -al /boot" are at the bottom of this post.
How do I do it?
If there's anything else you need/want to know, please ask.
Thank-you in advance.

If X11 login goes, what happens with x2go?
by Neal Becker
I totally depend on x2go for connection to my remote server. With f40,
what happens? Is login to X11 desktop supported? I assume this is
required for x2go to work.

F40: mock fails with (some) explicit paths in BuildRequires:
by Sam Varshavchik
I cannot mock-rebuild packages that have /some/ BuildRequires: with explicit
file dependencies, for F40. I have no idea why just /some/ of them are
rejected.
I'm using mock to rebuild SRPMS in an F40 chroot, and it fails thusly:
Updating and loading repositories:
updates 100% | 286.7 KiB/s | 23.8 KiB | 00m00s
fedora 100% | 229.3 KiB/s | 19.7 KiB | 00m00s
Repositories loaded.
Failed to resolve the transaction:
No match for argument: /usr/include/ltdl.h
No match for argument: /usr/lib/rpm/macros.d/macros.systemd
These are absolute file paths referenced by BuildRequires:.
I replaced the problematic BuildRequires: with package names, libtool-ltdl-
devel and systemd-rpm-macros. This allowed the build to proceed.
But here's a head-scratcher. Here's (a part of) my diff:
--- a/courier-authlib/courier-authlib.spec.in
+++ b/courier-authlib/courier-authlib.spec.in
@@ -54,7 +54,7 @@ BuildRequires: redhat-rpm-config
BuildRequires: courier-unicode-devel
BuildRequires: %{__make}
BuildRequires: shadow-utils
-BuildRequires: %{_includedir}/ltdl.h
+BuildRequires: libtool-ltdl-devel
That %{__make} is still there. Somewhat unneeded, but it's there. And this
built fine.
So, can anyone tell me why %{_includedir}/ltdl.h, which is
/usr/include/ltdl.h, got rejected by mock+dnf5, but %{__make}, which is
/usr/bin/make was just peachy?

HP elitedesk 705 G1 mt will not boot from dvd
by Michael Hennebry
I've been trying to get an HP elitedesk 705 G1 mt to boot from dvd.
So far no luck.
I've managed to get DVD listed as the
first boot entry for both UEFI and legacy.
The machine seems to try and fail.
The error messages go by rather fast.
I think I've seem things like "invalid header" and "no such file",
but am not as sure as I'd like to be.
Most recently I tried and failed with
Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-39.1.5.iso
Any idea what I should try next?
My late girlfriend used it.
I remember her password,
which is why she is not on the sudo list.
I do not remember either the root password or my own.

Uh-oh...
by Dave Ihnat
Didn't see this go by, but it looks hot enough to risk a repeat posting.
From a friend:
It appears there's been a very serious effort to backdoor sshd on
Linux via the xz compression/decompression system.
https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4
If you have anything running very recent Linux, it's worth investigating
whether you're affected.
IBM Red Hat says, if you're running Fedora 40 or Fedora Rawhide:
> PLEASE IMMEDIATELY STOP USAGE OF ANY FEDORA
> RAWHIDE INSTANCES for work or personal activity.
The identity that did this got to the point of being not only an xz
maintainer but a Linux kernel contributor, and contributed to a number
of other Open Source projects as well over the course of years. The
identity may have been compromised to do this, or may have been created
to do this, and may have used other contributions to build rapport or
to compromise more projects as well.
I looked at the detection script available at the URL in the posting. It's
harmless at worst (don't know yet if it can detect anything).
Caveat Utilitor,

Installing weak dependencies: lsb_release - Why ?
by Francis.Montagnac@inria.fr
Hi.
I noticed, at least since March 19, that updating Fedora-39 installs
also the lsb_release RPM as a weak dependency.
Why ?
Is there a way to prevent that, except excluding this RPM at each
update ?
AFAIK those weak dependencies are controlled by the --supplements of
the RPM, but lsb_release has none.
In addition, the lsb_release RPM conflicts with redhat-lsb-core that
provides more files, for example:
/lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3 -> ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
that is needed by external binaries like lmutil (flexlm).
Thanks for any input.
