Live USB extra space
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I "Finally" have a customer interested in Fedora. I
talked him into letting me spin a Live USB flash drive
for him to play with before we jump ahead.
Question: Is there a way to use the extra space on the
drive to install a few more programs for him to experiment
with?
Many thanks,

how long does dnf system-upgrade take?
by Fulko Hew
I don't update my Fedora systems unless I have a real need,
so yesterday I started updating from F35 to F38
I used the:
dnf system-update download --releasever=xx
process.
- My first update from F35 to F36 worked.
- Then I did the F36 to F37 update.
KDE wouldn't work until I uninstalled qt5-qtwebengine-freeworld
to get KDE on X11 to work again.
- Once that was working I started the F37 to F38
It did all the downloads, transaction checking, and (presumably) installing
and is now showing:
Booting 'Fedora Linux (6.8.4-100.fc38.x86_64) 38 (KDE Plasma)'
It's been about 2 hours... How long do I have to wait?
It's also too bad, it doesn't tell you what it is or was last doing.
Help!

fail2ban on F40 is quiet
by Frank Bures
Hi,
My machine is exposed to the wild and I was seeing hundreds of connection
attempts per day in my logs and in fail2ban.log.
All these nefarious activities ceased after upgrade to F40.
Question:
Is there something fundamentally different in F40 connectivity?
I can still connect from outside on pre-defined ports using ssh so my ISP
is not blocking anything.
Thanks
Frank

Unable to do F40 Live Workstation install on machine with very old
graphics
by Andre Robatino
I have an old machine from 2008 with very old integrated graphics (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430). Up to and including F39, I was able to do a Live Workstation install simply by using the nomodeset boot option. With F40 that no longer works - it fails to come up in graphical. I ended up doing a netinstall, but it came up in text mode instead of graphical, and suggested VNC, which I was able to use to do a graphical install (necessary since I wanted to preserve /home, requiring custom partitioning). After installation, it turns out that by replacing gdm with another display manager (I used lxdm), I could even use GNOME, though screen locking, which requires gdm, doesn't work - not a big deal.
So a couple of questions. Is it possible to use VNC with a Live install? If so, can one avoid having to bring up graphical mode on the machine until after the install (since it won't work for me)? If one's intent is to go straight to the installation and skip simply running live, is there something like a boot option to allow this? I guess what I'm asking is whether it's possible to do something like a headless Live install.

Keyboard dead with anydesk logon
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 39
anydesk-6.3.2-1.el7.x86_64
lightdm-1.32.0-7.fc39.x86_64
Any idea why the keyboard and the onscreen keyboard
wont let me type my password into lightdm's password
prompt.

Anydesk told me to reboot. Did not work.

Just to note: RPMfusion just put out an updated nvidia package that now works with newer kernels.
by Michael D. Setzer II
Had to have machine with older card keep running the 6.7.11
kernel in order to have a working nvidia driver for BOINC.
The newer ones now work with the 6.8 kernels.
Just to let others know.

Fedora 40 virtual machine
by Paolo Galtieri
I tried to create a Fedora 40 virtual machine under VMware version
17.0.2. The ISO image boots up fine, but when I double click on the
"Install to drive" It will often fail withe the following error:
Anaconda is unable to create /var/run/anaconda.pid because the file
already exists. Anaconda is already running, or a previous instance of
anaconda has crashed.
I may have to try several times before I can install it to the drive.
When it finishes installation and I click on "Finish Installation"
nothing happens. I expect it to say reboot system, but it does
nothing. I reboot manually and when it comes back up it initially says
"Initial setup" but then the screen flashes and the login prompt appears.
