finding missing font file (eurm10.map)
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
On a fully updated F39 system, I get the following font error when I run LaTeX:
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 eurm10
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for eurm10.
mktexpk: perhaps eurm10 is missing from the map file.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
(see the transcript file for additional information)
!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file eurm10): Font eurm10 at 600 not found
I looked around and came across a post from 2020 on Arch forums that says that I potentially need texlive-most, however this is not available on F39.
How do I get around the above error?
Many thanks for your suggestions, and my very best wishes,
Ranjan

Virtualbox vs VMware for Fedora?
by Sbob
All;
I am running Fedora39, I have run VMware workstation for years, and I
have on and off had issues since VMware does not officially support
Fedora, normally I run a patch after each kernel update and it mostly
just works.
I am also running the osx unlocker so I can run mac VM's
I recently tried virtualbox on a spare laptop, havent looked at
virtualbox in years, and I was impressed, a few questions for the community:
- can I run the osx unlocker with virtualbox?
- does virtualbox have the same issues where it needs a patch after
each kernel and sometimes
just breaks with a new kernel , even with the patch?
Thanks in advance

how to test USB stick capacity.
by home user
Good evening,
background
==========
In the wikipedia article about USB Flash drives, it says ("https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive#Counterfeit_products")
------
Counterfeit USB flash drives are sometimes sold with claims of having higher capacities than they actually possess. These are typically low-capacity USB drives with modified flash memory controller firmware that emulates larger capacity drives (for example, a 2 GB drive being marketed as a 64 GB drive). When plugged into a computer, they report being the larger capacity they were sold as, but when data is written to them, either the write fails, the drive freezes up, or it overwrites existing data. Software tools exist to check and detect fake USB drives,[46][47] and in some cases it is possible to repair these devices to remove the false capacity information and use its real storage limit.
------
A footnote leads me to believe that a tool "H2testw" could detect bad sticks and maybe fix them.
question
========
I tried man, dnf, and dnfdragora to find H2testw. Nothing. I also tried to find something else to test and fix sticks. Nothing. What do we have for this purpose either already installed or that I can get via dnf?

Cinnamon and menu bar placement
by Alex
Hi,
I'm using Fedora38 on my desktop with Cinnamon. Until a few days ago, the
icons of the apps I'm currently using/running, like Chrome and Thunderbird,
were positioned along the bottom left, next to the Fedora Menu and the
desktop switcher icon.
Somehow I hit a button, and they've al moved to the lower right, but are
also now very small. How do I control where the icons for running apps are
placed?
[image: Screenshot from 2024-02-04 12-59-21.png]
Some of the icons, like the reminders and notifications icons are supposed
to be there, but the ones to the left of them should be on the right side.
Thanks,
Alex

Fedora 39: samba and printers shared
by Dario Lesca
On a fresh Fedora 39 server installed, I have install samba + cups +
cups-pdf to allow some client windows to print and generate PDF on
server in order to analyse and convert these files into another format.
I have configure smb.conf in this way[1] (add "[global]/map to guest =
bad user" and "[printers]/browseable = Yes"), but when I try to browse
the server, printer cups-pdf are not show into list of printer
browsable[2] an I cannot connenct to it,
What's is wrong on my configurations?
Many thanks

As many of you may know, FOSDEM is going on but still, we are hosting
the KDE test weeks.
You can still submit the results here[0]. KDE is very important for

running auto apps on tgt srvr via ssh access
by bruce
Hi.
Doing some research and thought I'd ask here as well.
A potential use case has a user fetching projects from "Github" and
running tests with the project on the tgtTestServer
The tgtTestServer can have the shell script to fetch/test the Github
project. However, I'm wondering what might be suitable/reasonable
methods of "sshing" into the tgtServer to initiate/run the script.
Any pointers/sites for this kind of thing would be great.
thanks
