Fedora 28 "crash"
by Bob Goodwin
.
Thursday evening we had a power failure and I shutdown all the computers
to get the load off my UPS's. I have booted the Fedora 28 computer this
morning and a what was a non-problem has blossomed into a real one. The
other three all booted normally when I started things after the power
came back on, however I did not try the F28 until this morning.
Since the F28 install a window has always come after the xfce desktop opens:
"Oops, We're sorry, it looks like boot_image-/
vmlinuz-4.17.18.200.fc28.x86_64 crashed. Please contact the developer ..."
I ignored it until now since it seemed to be meaningless, the system
connected to the LAN and the internet and went happily on its way. Not
so today, the cursor arrow sits in the error message box and can't be
moved and the Only thing that works is ctrl-alt-F1 which brings back the
user boot screen asking for a password, normally bobg, but I tried
alternate as well as root, which brings up Gnome, also frozen in some
strange fashion, I never use that so did not investigate much there, a
presentation hard for me t read. Along with the Oops window is another
that ells me I am connected to enp2so or whatever.
Tried the two alternative kernels, no difference.
I can ssh from this computer which allows me to reboot it conveniently
[bobg@Box10 ~]$ ssh -X bobg(a)192.168.1.83
bobg(a)192.168.1.83's password:
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
Last login: Sat Sep 15 13:51:55 2018
[bobg@box83 ~]$ su
Password:
[root@box83 bobg]# reboot
I tried "startxfce4" via ssh from this computer after a fresh start, the
xfce splash screen comes up but that crashes with a lot of errors and
I'm not even certain that approach should work.
So I am stuck and need some help troubleshooting.

KDE update widget showing 2433 updates
by gumper
Hello,
Just recently my KDE update widget starting showing that I have 2433
updates available. When I look at the versions of the available updates,
it shows me the same versions that are currently installed on my system.
Also, running "dnf upgrade" is only showing several updates and not the
2433.
What would cause this? I'm assuming that the cache that the widget uses is
somehow empty or corrupt. Is there a way to correct this? I'm a little
hesitant on just letting the widget install or try to install the 2433
updates.
My system is up to date running Plasma version 5.13.4 and KDE Frameworks
5.48.0.
Thanks for any help provided.

OT: backing up a DVD
by JD
Using dd to back up a DVD (for in case dvd gets damaged), I am getting
frequent messages like
..... File shrank by 1069672448 bytes; padding with zeros
So, the .VOB file copied to HD is all messed up????
I do not know yet, because the process is still in progress.
In the past, I never had this issue, and I have seen many
of my dvd's and CD's get damaged when inserted into friend's
home entertainment centers, and had to rebuild them from HD backup.
Any clues how to prevent this message coming from dd ?
Thanx

Setting console font from terminal fails ("cannot open font file")
by Kevin Wilson
Hello all,
I want to enlarge the fonts I am using in terminal (when logging as
non root) on Fedora 28.
I installed the terminus-fonts rpm on fedora 28 (dnf install terminus-fonts)
When I try from a terminal (I mean not gnome-terminal, but the
terminal you get into when logging in
without GUI/X windows)
setfont ter-132b
I get
"cannot open font file"
I tried
cp /usr/share/fonts/terminus/ter-132b.pcf.gz /lib/kbd/consolefonts/
and running again the same setfont command, still it fails.
I am usign GNOME, not KDE (not sure it matters in this case).
Any ideas ?
Regards,
Kevin

F28 support for Broadcom BCM4322?
by dsavage@peaknet.net
After my trusty ThinkPad W700 failed I've been forced to fall back to an
ancient Dell E6500 laptop with Broadcom BCM4322 WiFi. Apparently Fedora 28
Workstation doesn't support that chipset. I'm forced to drag around a
<long> Ethernet cable. No matter what I try, I cannot enable WiFi.
Any suggestions?

printer stopped working, and how to fix it
by Neal Becker
For some unknown reason, an HP laserjet I had been using for some years
suddenly stopped working with F28. After some investigation, I found the
problem was:
Sep 14 14:32:20 nbecker2 cupsd[871]: [Job 1202] PID 14791 (gs) stopped with
status 1!
After more searching on the web, I found the answer was
lpadmin -p m750 -o pdftops-renderer-default=pdftops
apparently tells cups to use cairo instead of gs and this fixed my issue.

Anyone on Ryzen 5 APU - with problems?
by lejeczek
hi guys
I wonder, I cannot boot Fedora without - amd_iommu=off - that's the
first issue. You guys?
I'm on Lenovo Ideapad E485 with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U & F28.
Second issue is - I use external monitor (via HDMI in "join" setup) and
if system went to sleep or HDMI got disconnect then laptop's display
would show something that I do not think many of you might have seen,
unless you are middle-aged at least - it's noise of that kind like in
old days tube TVs would show when signal was lost.
It looks very funny but also so very wrong :)
But when displays both are okey, and when I lock gnome(@Wayland) session
and unlock/login again then both screens would be ... kind of blinking,
infrequently. Reboot is needed to get rid of blinking.
I've tried kernels up to 4.18.5-200.fc28.x86_64
Care to share your thoughts?
many thanks, L.

Permissions for USB devices for remote users
by Robert Moskowitz
I 'just discovered' (more likely forgot) that if I vnc to a system as a
user, even one in the Wheel group, I cannot mount any USB devices. A
system security feature, not a bug.
Is there a policy that I can add (and full steps for it) to enable a
specific user to have USB (mount drives and such) access when connected
via VNC?
thanks
