How do I start Xfce from the command line?
by Robert Moskowitz
I have switched a system to multi-user with:
systemctl set-default multi-user.target
Now I want to startup Xfce, and I can't.
I tried startx and startxfce4
both failed.
How do I do this? Or how do I go back to gui target. at least temporarily?
thanks

changed any print related settings, in t-bird or elsewhere.

KDM and (not) logging out
by andrea
Hi,
Fedora 28.
I was forced to use KDE as opposed to GNOME due to other issues (see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1585491) and I've had the following issue more often
than not.
Once a user logs out of KDE it might take a while (sometimes forever) to get a new KDE login window.
Other times I try a reboot from the console and it tells me there are still users logged in.
There are 3 people using the PC at home, and except me the other 2 are simply browsing the web.
I (try to) login in the evening and often have to reboot the machine.
This has been a complete reinstall from Fedora 27 and users folders have been wiped clean.
I am using sddm as login manager.
GDM is far superior, but its integration with KDE was poor.
Overall I can't wait to get Fedora 29 where I hope GNOME will work properly.
Below is the output of ps after the user jackie has logged out from KDE.
I see a lot of stuff still hanging there.
Is this what causes KDE not to present a new login window? or to prevent quick shutdown?

efibootmgr?
by Tom Horsley
I've been trying to decrypt efibootmgr docs and I've
given up :-).
I keep getting the impression you can't examine any
efi boot info other than the one currently active
which you booted from.
What if I want to stick a removable disk into the
system and examine the boot parameters on it?
Any way to point efi tools to a completely separate
non-root disk that just happens to be plugged into
the system?

grub net boot
by Louis Garcia
I have uefi pxe boot setup and working fine. grub.cfg has different
menu options pointing to different kickstart files for different
systems.
Is there a way to have grub load different grub.cfg files accourding
to its MAC? I read some docs saying grub.cfg-01-<MAC> but does not
work.
Thanks.

Brother MFCL2710DW on Fedora?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
i'm replacing an Hp Officejet 4620 after print heads problems in 2 years of
life.
I got tired with inkjet and their imitations and due to my sporadic needs
and only b/w, I would like to buy a black white laserjet with scanner
capabilities too.
I see the product in object that seems quite good from an hw point of view
but it is not clear to me the status with Linux support, both with printing
and scanning.
Anyone using this product or similar one in the line?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

rc.local lpadmin
by Louis Garcia
I would like to add a printer at system startup if one is not present.
I created /etc/rc.d/rc.local and made the file executable
if [ ! -f "/etc/cups/ppd/Officejet-6700.ppd" ]; then
/sbin/lpadmin -p Officejet-6700 -o printer-is-shared=false -L "Office" -E
-v hp:/net/Officejet_6700?ip=172.16.0.2 -m
lsb/usr/HP/hp-officejet_6700.ppd.gz -d Officejet-6700
touch /root/createdprinter.txt
else
touch /root/printerexists.txt
fi
After boot I get the file /root/createdprinter.txt but no printer was
created. if the printer exists before I reboot I get
/root/printerexists.txt so I know the startup script runs properly. I run
the exact lpadmin command as the script in root terminal and works fine.
Why does that command not want to work in a startup script? Is the boot
environment different?
