XFCE desktop's integration with dvd playing
by Sam Varshavchik
Anyone happen to know what kind of integration I should expect from F21's
XFCE spin's desktop, vis-a-vis playing DVDs?
I have vlc installed. If I drop a DVD in, the icon for the disk does appear
on the desktop, but clicking on it simply opens the file browser. Which
isn't very useful.
I can start vlc manually, and tell it to play the disk, and that's fine. But
too many steps.
After creating a desktop icon that executes "vlc /dev/sr0", I now have a
permanent icon on the desktop, that starts dvd playback, after the dvd is
inserted, which is fine, but I wouldn't expect non-technical users to figure
out how to do this.
Incidentally, the desktop's "Parole media player" can't handle the playback,
and pops up with a "gstreamer back end error, could not get title
information for the dvd", but vlc is fine.

Passwords stored by Firefox
by Timothy Murphy
I was rather surprised to find that I could read the passwords
stored by Mozilla/Firefox (Preferences=>Security).
I always assumed they were encrypted in some way.
Pure ignorance, I guess.

Re: mtp devices
by Steven Usdansky
Look under /run/user/<your uid>/gvfs. You'll find a directory
something like mtp:host=%5Busb%3A002%2C005%5D$ which is the mount
point for your phone

F21 on UEFI
by Heinz Diehl
Hi,
I've built countless computers in the last 20 years, but none with the nowadays
modern UEFI bioses. Unfortunately, my main machine seems to have gotten some problems
after the last lightning storm, and it's time to renew the whole thing.
On the SSD, there's a fully updated F21, which I'd like to take over to the new
machine. However, the old machine has a "common" oldstyle BIOS, and the new
board has an UEFI one. All the drivers for the new mainboard are in the kernel,
so that won't be a problem. I've read somewhere that such an UEFI bios can be
switched to some kind of legacy mode, where it emulates an oldstyle BIOS. In other
words, that would allow me simply building the new system and taking the SSD
drive with me.
My question: is this right, or do you see a better way to do that?
Thanks,
Heinz.

how to deal with two RPMs of thr same name
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have packaged stapler (alternative to obsoleted pdftk) as an RPM. But there is already another package by the same name doing something else in the Fedora repos. Is there an easy way to rename my stapler to pdfstapler or something like that. I don't feel that it is my place to ask the stapler developer to rename his program something else:
https://github.com/hellerbarde/stapler/tree/master
Is there an easy way through a spec file to go in and change the name of stapler to pdfstapler and then create the RPM.
Btw, the spec file is here:
$ fpaste pdfstapler.spec
Uploading (2.4KiB)...
http://ur1.ca/jqgcf -> http://paste.fedoraproject.org/185742/15606142
Going by the thread titled "pdftk" in December, pdfstapler will be a welcome substitute for pdftk. It certainly is for me.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Network Manager vpnc
by Mike Wohlgemuth
Work recently switched to a Palo Alto GlobalProtect based VPN, which
works with vpnc. I am able to connect to it fine if I just configure
the settings under "Identity" in NetworkManager using
NetworkManager-vpnc. However, this sends all my traffic over the VPN,
so it's not ideal. I should be able to customize the settings under
"IPv4" to do split routing, and I even have instructions for doing so
under Ubuntu, but whenever I change anything under "IPv4" the VPN fails
to connect. I'm at a loss as to how to get any better debugging info to
see why that is. Is there some trick to getting this working that I am
missing?
Thanks
Mike

What's going on with net.ipv4.conf.???.rp_filter ?
by Bob Marcan
Hi.
With previous kernel 3.18.5-101.fc20.x86_64
sysctl -w net.ipv4.conf.${interface}.rp_filter=0
was enough to run iptv.
With kernel 3.18.6-100.fc20.x86_64
sysctl -w net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter=0 is needed to get it run.
It is not the first time to observe this.
Does anyone have some clue about this?
