Fedora 20 network issues
by CS DBA
Hi all;
I'm setting up Fedora 20 on a Lenovo W540,
I'm seeing network issues :
- The wireless connections seem unusually slow and I get disconnects often
- The wired connection often will not connect at all
The wireless card is :
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260AC
However I'm not sure why this affects the wired connection
Can anyone help me debug this?
Thanks in advance

In the famous words of the Three Miles Island operators "Ignore those

Every one of my systems here is showing some subset of this error. Some
only show sshd, others all three. Disconcerting to say the least.
Are other people seeing this? I'm not looking forward to a full scrub
and clean installation.

WebGL and OpenGL applications on AMD GPUs
by sam mike
Have you had any success running either WebGL or OpenGL on AMD GPUs with
the open-source drivers?
I have an AMD 7750, Southern Islands generation card that has never worked
with Fedora 20's open source graphics stack. (Using the proprietary drivers
is also not possible or system-breaking, or I have not figured out how to
tweak it.)
Would appreciate any help or way to further diagnose this problem.

black-grey screen and how to add kernel nomodeset in F20?
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have had this issue for a while (both in F19 and F20 -- really my
only issue) on a Dell XPS 14. So, basically, after a while, and at
unclear intervals, of lying in idle mode (and unrelated to any task I
have been running from what I can tell), the screen goes black. Not
the black that is when it it hibernated or shutdown, but a greyish
black. The machine is unresponsive, however some key-presses set up by
me do send it instructions to hibernate (and it does so). It does come
back as if nothing happened, but for the hibernate.
I wonder if this is caused by kernel modesetting (which has always been
a sore point with almost everything I have had) so I was wondering if
the nomodeset should be enabled? If so, how does one go about this on
F20? (And of course, are there other explanations for this behavior?)
There does not seem to be anything on the log files for me to clue in
on.
Many thanks for reading! And thanks also for any helpful suggestions!!
Best wishes,
Ranjan

By looking at the specs, the machine should work out of the box. (We
have a number of comparable high-end Asus laptops and they simply
work).
*However*, in-order to get the most of the machine, you'll either need
to install the nVidia binary driver (from freshrpms) or (possibly)
install the hybrid nvidia/bumblebee driver / tools [1].
BTW, I would consider changing the subject of this thread.

Restoring from Duplicity -- frustration.
by Bill Case
Hi:
I have been at this for four or five hours over two or three days. I
have googled and manual studied. My goal should be simple but it is not
turning out that way.
I backed up regularly to a second disk sdb on a back up partition
labeled LinuxBUb. The backup file is label bill-19BU. I backed up
regularly using duplicity up to the end of December 31, 2012. I then
backed up again with duplicity on March 11, 2014. In otherwords all of
my work for 2013 is in that last back up.
While installing Fedora 20, I managed to destroy my Fedora 19
installation. Luckily, I thought, I had that last backup.
Everything that I have tried fails to restore the March 11 backup
although I can clearly see March 11 Duplicity backup files saved with
the December 31,2012 back ups.

fc20 wireless networking problem
by Luke Nath
Upgraded from fc18 to fc20 using fedup.
Most went well. I had to restart the process because of a transient
disk issue (Drive went to sleep).
After that all was done and I rebooted. It booted into the fedup kernel
to finish and complete the update.
After that I rebooted into the fc20 kernel.
Found that wpa_supplicant is no longer able to pair with the
wifi router. I am getting error:
wls01: Association request to the driver failed
The options to wpa_supplicant are (among other things):
-iwls01 -Dwext -B -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf ....etc
Would the networking gurus on this list please help me analyze
this problem? Let me know what other info you need?
Thanx

Five Things in Fedora This Week (2014-03-18)
by Matthew Miller
Reposting from <http://fedoramagazine.org/?p=1231>, for those of you who
prefer email to the web. :)
Fedora is big project, and it’s hard to follow it all. This new Fedora
Magazine feature will highlight interesting happenings in five different
areas every week. It won’t be comprehensive news coverage — just quick
summaries and links to each. So, here we go for March 18th, 2014:
Flock 2014 registration and talk proposals open
-----------------------------------------------
In case you missed the article in Fedora Magazine a few days ago… don’t miss
it. The website at <http://flocktofedora.org/>, and the talk proposal
deadline is coming up fast: April 3rd, 2014.
Fedora 21 feature planning in progress
--------------------------------------
Looking to do something new for Fedora 21? The initial schedule is set and
many changes are already accepted by FESCo. Submission deadline is April
8th, 2014. If you have something to add, find out how at
<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Policy>.
Ambassadors discuss inactive memberships
----------------------------------------
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/ambassadors/2014-March/022263.html>
Interesting discussion on Fedora Ambassadors mailing list about a process
for marking the memberships of people who aren’t actively participating as
inactive. Looks like there’s wide support for the low-overhead, non-punitive
proposal (which allows easy reactivation).
KDE talks about Fedora Products
-------------------------------
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/kde/2014-March/013196.html>
Another interesting discussion: KDE SIG is working on a proposal for “Fedora
Plasma”, a desktop product focused at educational and scientific use. FESCo
and the Fedora Advisory Board have previously approved the governance and
PRDs for Cloud, Server, and Workstation (the latter of which recently
elected to use Gnome as the base). It will be interesting to see how this
all fits together.
Planning for new Fedora web design
----------------------------------
The Fedora Websites and Design teams are working on refreshed websites in
support of Fedora.next. I’m cheating a bit because some this is more than a
week old, but it’s all still in progress. This includes an ambitious plan
for a new community hub, although initial work focuses on updating the Get
Fedora “brochure” site.
Endnote
-------
So that’s it for this week. If something didn’t make the list and you think
it should have, that probably just means I missed it, not that it wasn’t
important. Please drop me a line and we’ll make this better next time.
Bonus mailing list questions!
-----------------------------
Is it helpful to post this here? If so, is full text important, or is
posting a link to the web site fine? Would it be helpful to post it to other
lists as well or instead? What about repurposing the defunct "news" mailing
list for just this purpose?

unwanted eclipse deps
by Kevin
when installing eclipse on F20, a vast number of dependencies are resolved
most of which seem to be for development of eclipse itself. Is there a
package that only provides the IDE?
