OpenJDK packaging bug in Fedora 19
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
This is a minor bug, but a big annoyance for anyone who
uses java on Fedora. Latter I try to register on Fedora Project bug
track.
I saw the same issue on two diferent systems: one upgraded from
F17 to F19 via fedup, another installed clean from live media. Both had
yum -y update after installation. Both were 32-bit machines, I did not
test on x86_64.
"java" is not on the classpath after install, altough
java-1.7.0-openjdk comes installed by default. See [ I hope eveyone can
understand this termina session even if it's in portuguese:
[root@lgx200 ~]# java -version
bash: java: Comando não
encontrado...
[root@lgx200 ~]# yum -y install java-1.7.0-openjdk
icedtea-web
Plugins carregados: langpacks,
refresh-packagekit
updates/19/i386/metalink | 1.8 kB 00:00:00
O pacote
1:java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25-2.3.10.4.fc19.i686 já está instalado em
sua última versão
O pacote icedtea-web-1.4-2.fc19.i686 já está instalado
em sua última versão
Nada a ser feito
So I checked alternaives:
root@lgx200 ~]# alternatives --config java
Há 3 programas que
oferecem "java".
Seleção
Comando
-----------------------------------------------
*+ 1
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk/bin/java
2
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0-gcj/bin/java
3
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk.i386/bin/java
Indique para manter a
seleção atual[+] ou digite o número da seleção:
There was a default
java configured, but there's nothing on the path specified by [1]:
[lozano@lgx200 ~]$ ls /usr/lib/jvm/
java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0/
jre-1.5.0/
java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25.i386/
jre-1.5.0-gcj/
java-1.7.0-openjdk.i386/ jre-1.7.0-openjdk.i386/
jre/
jre-gcj/
I fixed this issue by running alternatives --config again,
then choosing [3]. Now "java" works on the shell.
I guess there should
be no "/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk/bin/java" in alternatives, or this
path should be a symlink to
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk.i386/bin/java, in which case there
shouldn't be this latest option in alternatives.
Maybe the intent was
to have 32-bit and 64-bit OpenJDK on the same machine, and allow the
user to choose each one as the default java.

About NAS versus Samba
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
Has anyone tried to configure a NAS server to authenticate users using a
Samba PDC, or even a Samba4 DC (AD-compatible) or an IPA server?
I'm evaluating replacing some Linux file server for a NAS product, but
all them make me nervous when the vendor talks about "Active Directory
support" and nothing else.
In theory, many NASes are Linux boxes running samba, so there shouldn't
be a problem, except if the web admin interface won't support a samba DC
setup and I won't have SSH access to configure the NAS samba myself.
So I'm asking if someone there has had any real experience, be it using
Fedora, CentOS or RHEL as the Samba3 PDC or Samba4 DC.
PS: I'm cross-posting because I asked before on the samba mailing list
and nobody cared to answer. Or nobody has had any real experience. I'm
hoing many sysadmins on the Fedora list also works on companies with
RHEL or CentOS and had a real experience to share.

FedUp leftovers
by SternData
According to the docs, "Files are downloaded to /var/lib/fedora-upgrade
and will be automatically cleaned up after the upgrade process is finished."
I have 1643 .rpm files in /var/lib/fedora-upgrade
Is it OK to delete them?

Does anybody know what package this is in....?
by William Oliver
I just had the oddest thing happen to me. I performed a multipackage update on F19. I don't remember what packages, it was just one of those notifications of "You have 18 updates pending" and I hit "Update."
When I rebooted my box, my alsa system was dead. No little mixer icon in the system tray (I am running KDE), no sound, no nothing. Alsamixer ncurses program was still there, but changing levels didn't change the (nonexistent) sound.
I brought up Apper (the KDE software manager) and it indicated that the alsa-firmware, alsa-lib, and alsa-tools were not installed -- though they had been before. I tried to install them, but nothing happened. So, then I went to the cli and tried yum install alsa-firmware, and it came back with the statement that it was already installed!
So, I *reinstalled* them using yum reinstall. At that point things started working again.
But... I still can't get the little mixer icon on my system tray. It's not an option when I try to configure it, though all the rest are still there. I can add the "ALSA volume control" plasmoid, and it works, but I'd like the little icon in the system tray.
So, I have two questions:
1) Anybody know why an update would kill the sound system?
2) What package might I need to reinstall to get that little widget in the system tray?
Thanks!

custom startup script
by Jerome Yanga
Hi all!
In the past, I would create custom startup scripts and create a link in the
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ directory.
Is this still a good practice? If not, please let me know where I should
put my custom startup scripts.
Thank you in advance.

Touchpad is not working anymore
by Diego Vargas
Hello All!
I've been playing with fedora a little bit and I just love it! I've have
the gnome GDM and the Cinnamon Desktop.
My Toshiba U945-S4140 is running Fedora 19 and Windows 7. Didn't like the
pre-installed Windows 8 and I just remove it.
They both were playing very well, until I've done two things:
1. Update a INF/Chipset deal on the Windows part.
2. Update the kernel on Fedora.
Since the first Update, the touchpad have stopped working.
The pointer is not being displayed and, if I connect an usb mouse I cannot
move it with the touchpad. (obviously, the usb mouse works perfectly).
I have this on /var/log/Xorg.0.log

X freezes in FC 18
by Jens Neu
Dear list,
I'm experiencing random freezes of two desktops, both up-to-date FC 18,
totally different hardware (Core2Duo E5300, Core i7), different Graphis
Cards but both Nvidia using nouveau with a dual monitor setup.
Desktop completely freezes, Num Lock on keyboard is dead. Gut feeling
tells me it is induced by scrolling.
When happening, I can ssh into the machine, everything looks perfectly
normal. No 100% CPU on nothing, no zombies, no whatever. Nothing in
dmesg, Xorg.0.log, messages.
Restart of graphical.target does not do anything, when killing
/usr/bin/X (with -9 though) I get kdm back.
Any thoughts where to debug further?
regards
Jens

Yes, I googled a bit and found it. I didn't realize that after typing
"e" I could scroll down in the menu that comes up. After finding that I
was able to add the "3" and get a prompt and delete the file
10-monitor.conf that I created earlier.
I now have two computers running F-19 and need to finish configuring,
made both fresh installs from the live spin, that leaves several hundred
megs of app's to download and updates, all of which burn up my allotment
of bandwidth so I am reluctant to waste it by starting over.
Thanks very much for your help,
Bob

F19 x86_64 Live DVD
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
The downloaded iso image for the Live DVD passes CHECKSUM just fine, but
the DVD won't boot on my ThinkPad W700. The error message says "No valid
operating system". Both Installation DVD and NetInstall CD will boot
just fine. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
