mcelog.service
by lee
Hi,
is the mcelog.service of any use to me?
There's a package mcelog-1.0-0.6.6e4e2a00.fc18.x86_64 installed and
listed as a leave by package-cleanup, the service is running;
/var/log/mce doesn't exist (which is probably good).
In which way would it help me to log such errors if there were any?

pnmixer and pulseaudio
by Corinna Vinschen
Hi,
I'm trying to run pnmixer in my xfce systray because it's nicer than the
default xfce4-mixer, and because I can run pavucontrol from there.
But I have a strange problem. Supposedly pnmixer can deal with ALSA and
PulseAudio(*). ALSA appears to work, but there's no way to control
PulseAudio channels for some reason. For the main volume control I have
only the choice between my two ALSA devices, an USB headset and the
internal HDA ATI SB card.
While controlling the volume of the headset works fine, when choosing
any of the channels of the SB card, changing the volume has no effect at
all (works in pavucontrol, though). Neither has the mute button.
Yes, I tried "Reload ALSA" multiple times with no effect at all.
In contrast, if I start xfce4-mixer, I have not only the choice between
the USB headset, and the HDA ATI SB also device, but I have additional
choices from PulseAudio. If I choose HDA ATI SB (Alsa Device), xfce4-mixer
can't change the volume of the device either. if I choose the matching
PulseAudio device "Playback: Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958)",
the xfce4-mixer volume control works.
As a sidenote, when changing the device in pnmixer's preference dialog,
after pressing the OK button an error dialog pops up, telling me "Mixer
detach error: No such file or directory". I have no idea what it's
trying to tell me.
Does anybody know how I can get pnmixer to recogize the PulseAudio
channels and use them for its volume control? Or if I'm doing something
wrong, can anybody tell me what that is?
Thanks,
Corinna

rc.local for shutdown?
by Tom Horsley
You can put random stuff to do at boot in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
and it will get run last thing at boot time.
Just out of curiosity, is there an equivalent file you
can get to run just before everything else at reboot or
shutdown time?

blkid, multipath and blacklist issue
by Will Yonker
Hi,
I have a Fedora 18 system that I just setup multipath
on. The problem is, blkid no longer reports UUIDs on any disk that I
have on the multipath.conf blacklist. Is there a way around
this? It presents a problem because I mount quite a few volumes via
their UUID because they are iSCSI and get different device IDs
frequently.

F18 unable to read sdcard (was fine with F17)
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am unable to read a SanDisk microSD card via its adapter, which read
fine with F17 and before on the same two 4-year-old notebooks (Dell
Latitude E6400 and E5400).
I searched some but most of the queries were with newer machines. Some
talk about success (and failure) with installing kmod-staging. But
these appear to be mentioned in the context of newer machines. (In any
case, I installed it (sudo yum install kmod-staging) but got no relief.
lspci and lsusb do not have any trace of the SD card.
Any suggestions? Happy to provide more information, of course.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Question about directory ownership
by Anthony
Hello Everyone,
How do I add myself as co-owner of a directory? I set up a new apache
server and need to transfer files to /var/www/html. The problem is, of
course, I've denied root login but don't have sufficient privs to
login and transfer files under my username.
How can I fix this?
Thanks,
Anthony

Anyone using Z87 chipset and Haswell cpu?
by Tom Horsley
My motherboard just died and I figured I'd upgrade to
latest and greatest, but it occurs to me that the Z87
is really new, so I just wondered if linux kernels know
about it yet?

Hallo guys,
I need one more dependency but I do not know how to figure out:
error: Failed dependencies:
*freetype = 2.4.2-3.fc14* is needed by freetype-devel-2.4.2-3.fc14.x86_64
how could I get this file, in order to complete my installation for
freetype-devel-2.4.2-3.fc14.x86_64
if I set using yum i got this error:
Error: Package: freetype-devel-2.4.2-3.fc14.x86_64 (fedora)
Requires: freetype = 2.4.2-3.fc14
Installed: freetype-2.4.2-4.fc14.i686 (@kambing-updates)
freetype = 2.4.2-4.fc14
Available: freetype-2.4.2-3.fc14.i686 (fedora)

What should I do,

I really appreciate for your help.
thank you.

Flash plugin RPM installed but not being used by Firefix
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks.
I've followed the instructions to install the flash plugin by downloading the
YUM version and then installing the RPM. I got no errors when doing any of
this. However, flash still does not work in Firefox. If I do 'about:plugins'
it isn't listed.
Any suggestions on what to try next. All I'm getting from Google is variations
of the same instructions I've already done.
