Alacarte on F-18/64 XFCE -
by Bob Goodwin
Is there a problem with "alacarte" or is it something I am doing wrong?
I have three Fedora-18/64 XFCE computers all producing the same errors:
[bobg@box10 ~]$ alacarte
(alacarte:14894): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:18:
Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.
(alacarte:14894): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:20:
Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.
Then when I pick an item and ask it to show the "Properties.":
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line
448, in on_properties_button_clicked

I would like to identify the names in the menus with nomenclature I can
understand, application names. Is there a way to do it with a text
editor, a file I can modify?

Multi-battery issue
by Gordon Messmer
I have a Thinkpad T430S with two batteries: primary + ultra-bay.
The laptop will run on one battery only until it is depleted, at which
point the other battery would normally be used, as I understand it.
However, when the battery in use nears 0%, the Fedora system will warn
the user that the battery is critically low, and then attempt to hibernate.
If I pull the ultra-bay battery before the hibernation, the system
recognizes the other battery as nearly fully charged and continues
operating as it should.
Does anyone have a different system with multiple batteries? Is this
problem common, or unique to this hardware? How is this supposed to work?

Has my fedora 18 installation been hacked?
by Georgios Petasis
Hi all,
I have a small server that I have recently upgraded to fedora 18. After
a while, I got notified by
the provider that their firewall catches thousands of requests, with the
following error message:
*Source IP*: ellogon-SKEL
*Source Port*: 35442
*Destination IP*: 216.82.176.7
*Destination Port*: 53
*Description*: Dropped UDP DNS request from dmz:ellogon-SKEL/35442 to
outside:216.82.176.7/53; packet length 1400 bytes exceeds configured
limit of 512 bytes
I have verified all packages (with rpm -Va), and didn't see anything
strange.
It is strange that the machine is trying to contact a server in USA,
isn't it?
Is there anything else to do, than re-installing the machine?
(Unfortunately, due to the huge load it creates to their firewall, they
remove the network cord from the server, so I have a few hours to debug
this...)

: Re: F18 on Dell xps13
by dave peters
;From: Gordon Messmer
;I received an XPS 13 yesterday!
;So far, I haven't seen any problems from it. Intel's video is quite
standard, and works as expected. WiFi is working. I've set up a ;few VMs
under Linux KVM with virt-manager. Media keys all work properly, as does
the OSD. The touchpad works as expected. I ;got around 6 hours of battery
life from it yesterday under use that included periods of heavy activity
(including the CPU, disk and WiFi ;access required to install multiple
server VMs on an encrypted volume group). I haven't tried to use the
DisplayPort output or ;BlueTooth, but the latter is at least correctly
detected on boot.
Thanks for that information. I hope to acquire one soon.

Performance of F17 and F18
by Gary Stainburn
I have been using Red Hat / Fedora ever since getting RH3.2 on floppy disk.
Both the distributions and the hardware have grown together and at no point
have I evern seen an upgrade dramatically affect the performance of a PC.
That is, not until F17.
I have it installed on 2 laptops, 2 servres and approx 5 desktop PC's and
every one of them is noticably slower than when it was running F16.
My questions are
1) Have others experienced the same problem with F17?
2) How have people found the performance of F18? I do not want to upgrade
again if my system performance is hit even further

Hello,
I got the following message:
Can not open the file /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices
Verify that you have USB compiled into your kernel,
have the USB core modules loaded, and have the
usbdevfs filesystem mounted
I assume that I need to install a module
Thank.

Is gnome-disks really incapable of dealing with a blank drive?
by Tom Horsley
I popped in my new 4TB drive yesterday and tried to use
gnome-disks to create a giant ext4 partition.
I couldn't find any option anywhere to create partitions,
I only found options to format, so I figured that would
implicitly create the partitions.
But no, it formatted /dev/sdc as an ext4 filesystem
(NOT /dev/sdc1).
Am I missing something, or is the gnome-disks utility
really this useless?
I eventually wrote a few megabytes of zeroes over the
top of it then used gparted instead to create a new
gpt partition table and make /dev/sdc1 (finally) an
ext4 partition.
