F18: grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template
by Joachim Backes
Dear F18 users,
installing some kernel (in my case: kernel-3.7.5-201.fc18.x86_64)
generates a grubby error message:
*grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template*
The kernel will be correctly installed, but it does not appear in
/boot/grub2/grub.cfg.
Even a previous "sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" and then
reinstalling the kernel does not help.
Anybody has a good hind for me?
Kind regards
Joachim Backes <joachim.backes(a)rhrk.uni-kl.de>

Scala has a lot of dependencies
by Brian Marshall
I tried to install Scala on Fedora 18, but the number of packages
seems excessive:
Install 1 Package (+101 Dependent packages)
Total download size: 130 M
Installed size: 218 M
It brings in Eclipse for some reason. Debian is much lighter:
The following NEW packages will be installed:
scala scala-library
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 9,876 kB of archives.
After this operation, 11.1 MB of additional disk space will be used.
(OpenJDK was already installed in both cases.) Is there a technical
reason why Scala is so heavy on Fedora? Is there a chance of the
dependencies being lightened up? Thanks.

firewalld?
by Neal Becker
I have a new f18 install. I see it has
rpm -q firewall-config
firewall-config-0.2.12-2.fc18.noarch
But my older system that I updated from f17 does not have this, it
is using the older firewall config (which I manually configured).
Should I bother to install firewall-config on my older system? Does
it offer some advantage?

As of 12 February 2013, Fedora 16 has reached its end of life for
updates and support. No further updates, including security updates,
will be available for Fedora 16. A previous reminder was sent on
May 31st [0].
Fedora 17 will continue to receive updates until approximately one
month after the release of Fedora 19. The maintenance schedule of
Fedora releases is documented on the Fedora Project wiki [1]. The
Fedora Project wiki also contains instructions [2] on how to upgrade
from a previous release of Fedora to a version receiving updates.
Cheers,
Dennis

Grey dialog boxes left around in Cinnamon
by Markus Lindholm
I have a machine on which I did a fresh installation of F18 right
after it was released, now perhaps since a week I have this problem
that different application leave behind grey dialog boxes that sit on
the top of the desktop. For example every time I use Remmina to
connect to a remote machine it leaves behind a grey box with the title
'Connecting to server', it cannot be removed or moved. This happens
only in Cinnamon and not in the default Gnome desktop.
Any advice?
/Markus

learn to edit your replies, people
by Tim
Looks like it's time, yet again, to remind people that you should trim
your posts when replying. Just about every message, lately, has not
edited out unnecessary, and often huge, quotes of the prior messages.
You don't need to quote the entire thread in each and every reply. Just
the prior message that you're directly responding to.
It's a waste of storage space on the mail server, your bandwidth, my
bandwidth, and every other person who receives the mail. And it makes
it a thorough pain to read through messages.

I updated to F18, after some time I realized that echoed kernel is older
that loaded kernel: why is grub like this??
