re: Samsung 840 Pro SSD Crashing
by Noah Cutler
I have the 830 and was researching whether or not fstab "discard" option
was still necessary for SSDs with ext4 partitions.
Apparently it is for most SSDs, except for the Samsung 840 Pro, which
apparently uses a new technology that conflicts with "discard"
In the event that you are using it, discard it as a test ;-)
Cheers,
Noah

irssi desktop notification on xfce
by Flavio Leitner
Hi,
I would like to see a desktop notification (a flashing tray icon would
be perfect) when some events happen in irssi, like highlighted words
for example.
I am using F18 and XFCE. I use irssi in Terminal currently.
As an alternative, I looked for how to make the Terminal button
blinks in the panel, but not success so far.
Any tips?
Thanks,

Last word (I hope) on mobo transplant
by Joe Zeff
I used my laptop to search out a thread on removing nVidia cruft on the
fedoraforum, because I remembered that it had what looked to be a good
suggestion. It was. I did the following as root:
yum remove *\nvidia*\
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
reboot
all of which can be done without network access. There were still a few
things to tidy up because disks weren't in the same order as they were
before, and one of them isn't (yet) connected, but that wasn't very
hard. Thunderbird still didn't want to start but before I started
nuking things I did a system update because there were probably updates
for F16 between the time it went into surgery and EOL, and one of them
was another Tbird update that fixed things. There are still a few
things needing my attention, but nothing urgent except for using
preupgrade one more time to get to F17. Later, of course, I'll try
fedup on my laptop and see how well it does with F18, which will tell me
if I want to do the same on the desktop or not. Thanx for the help you
gave me, and I hope that the above fix gets remembered for future reference.

Network configuration on F18
by Martín Marqués
I just finished reinstalling (fresh install from my old F16) my fedora
server which ended up with a bad disk.
The problem I'm seeing is related to, AFAICS, NetworkManager collision
with Network. In this server I don't want NM as I have a static IP
which should come up on interface eth0 (found that some configuration
files changed).
What I did was add this to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="c8:60:00:5a:f6:6c", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0",
ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"
And copied my old ifcfg-eth0 file from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
of my old system to the new one.
Now I can't get the server to come up with NM disabled and
Network.server enabled and giving me a good network configuration.
Also, and I think this is due to the network problem, my X session
gets stalled when finishing to start (a few minutes). The same when I
go to the terminal tty: they are blank for a moment and then the login
prompt comes up.
Is there any headline I can read on how to configure network without NM on F18?

FedUp experiences; moving to an F18 life.
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Currently, I'm on my third F18 experience:
Experience #1 - off-lease Dell D630 dual-core laptop w/ no pre-installed
OS, installed from DVD. The installation went smoothly; the issues that
remain are getting co-ordinated postgis 2.0/postgresql 9.2 packages, and
some Xfce UI considerations (the former means that there is a frail
eco-system for working on F18 PostGIS 2.0 things, while the latter is an
RTFM thing).
Experience #2 - upgrade creaky and (relatively) slow Dell 600m Inspiron
Laptop from F17 to F18. FedUp worked smoothly, but since this was over a
DSL network connection, it took some time. Same outstanding issues as #1
(PostGIS/GDAL/Postgresql software ecosystem is shaky in F18; and UI Xfce
annoyances).
Experience #3 - upgrade a home-assembled dual core box from F17 to F18
using FedUp.
After issueing the following command:
fedup-cli --network 18 --debuglog /var/log/fedupdebug.log
The following burp showed up:

lock screen
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I am 2 machines with fedora 16.
On one the screenlocking works fine, on the other one, it does not
work.
The screen is never lock after 10 min (Lock ON) as required.
In addition, when I click on "Lock Screen" nothing happens.
But, if I dial xlock, it turns the screen locked.
What did I miss ?
Is a service missing?
Thank

Trouble with Plantronics 478 USB headset
by Corinna Vinschen
Hi,
I purchased a Plantronics Audio .478 USB headset for using under Fedora
18. The headset is recognized at once, but I have trouble with the
remote control in the cable. There are three buttons, "+" and "-" to
control the headphone volume, and one to mute the mic(*).
The problem is that the buttons only work exactly once after plugging in
the headset. If I press "+", even only for a short time, the volume
level goes up and up until it hits the maximum level after a couple of
seconds. Pressing "-" afterwards has no effect at all.
If I press "-" after plugging in, the volume goes down to 0 and sticks
there, no pressing of "+" can change that.
The "mic mute" button works only once, too, and afterwards there's no
way to unmute the mic, except for plugging off the headset and plugging
it in again.
The audio control appears to broken as well. After pressing "+ or "-",
if I try to change the volume in pavucontrol, it changes to the one I
chose, but then fades either up to max, if I had pressed the "+" button
before, or it fades down to 0 if I had pressed the "-" button before.
Does anybody know if there's a solution to this problem? Using the
volumes and mute buttons is kind of essential when in a conf call.
Or do I have to return the thingy since it's known not to work right
under Linux?
Thanks,
Corinna
(*) There's a forth button, but it only works with sepcial software
under Windows or Mac, afaik.

I'm too stupid for firewalld
by Valent Turkovic
I feel really stupid because I don't seam to be able to operate new
firewalld on Fedora 18. I'm Fedora user since FC6 but this is beyond me...
I tried adding ssh port and 4040 tcp port to services list (Subsonic
server) but not Subsonic server or ssh are accessible. I tried disabling
whole firewall, still not accessible...
Only uninstalling firewalld did the trick.
So I hope there is somebody more inteligent than me to show me how to
operatate firewalld.
I'm not stranger to iptables, so I'm willing to go full manual mode if
needed be, just point me in the right direction because I'm definitely lost.
Cheers,
Valent.
