how configure systemd for not killing console shells when switching runlevels 3<->5?
by Franta Hanzlík
On F16/systemd-37-17.fc16.i686, when I'm working in runlevel 3 on
consoles and then use "telinit 5" or "systemctl isolate
runlevel5.target", then all my console shells and programs there
running are killed. As well when I'm working in runlevel 5 on
consoles and then switch to runlevel 3 - all console shells are
killed too.
Is there any solution how fix this systemd crap so that will work as
in F14- (i.e. logged consoles will remain running) ?

AV (RCA) Cable in Fedora and Linux??
by Manuel Escudero
So here's the thing:
Few days ago, I bought a projector, and this projector has two entrances:
1) Mini USB
2) AV IN
The mini USB only lets you connect an USB Drive via an adapter and read the
data
from it, you can't use it to connect your PC to the projector via USB
cable, the projector
doesn't recognize that connection as a usb device itself, The AV Connection
uses
a female RCA Cable like this one:
http://50.30.33.54/gaolinimages/images/desc/61/20101105/A0366000JE/InsetI...
(The small black one goes to the projector and the other three females are
free)
So what I tried basically was to connect that cable to the projector and
then used this one:
http://www.pcwizkid.co.uk/images/usb%20to%203rca.jpg
To connect it to the computer via USB, in theory Fedora should recognize
the projector as
a second "monitor" and then the projector should show the image of the
computer in the "AV IN" option right?
but it doesn't happen :S
When I conect the projector to the computer via AV IN => USB neither the
projector
recognizes the computer or the computer the projector, did a test with a
lsusb to confirm...
Am I doing something wrong? does I need a hardware converter or a program
in order to this to work?
Because once I conected my Fedora Laptop to another projector Via VGA cable
and the same thing
happened, with Windows/Mac computers everything worked flawlessly.
Can anyone help??

NX is working fine from the fedora packages
but it is really a long time ago since i
had to configure it and as far as i remeber
there were some missing links/paths
i have configured this around 2007 and tend
to upgrade/migrate my configurations over years
this is a german howto which maybe a little out of date but should
with a little "locate"-magic work also these days

Exim sucess or fail? F16

service exim restart
Restarting exim (via systemctl): [ OK ]
[root@frank01 ~]# systemctl status exim.service
exim.service - SYSV: Exim is a Mail Transport Agent, which is the
program that moves mail from one machine to another.

From what this is telling me exim, can't PID(dle)
A quick search on /etc/exim.conf dont mention a pid.
man exim, only mention it under -d (debug options)
*Exim only used to send logs to me (via interweb), using /etc/aliases.

alsactl restore in rc.local
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I try to configure my microphone, using alsactl.
At boot time, the mic is not working. If I use the xcfce mixer utility,
I can open the mic and it is workng fine.
After that, I run alsactl store and my config is stored in /etc/asound.state
If I reboot, the mic is not working.... If I run "alsactl restore", as a
normal user, the mic is working.
So, I put /usr/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.state restore 0
But, without any success: the mic is closed and I have to run alsactl
restore as a normal user to open it....
Why? And how to have automatically working at boot time?
Thanks

why is ipv6 fixly compiled in latest F15 and all F16 kernels?
by Franta Hanzlík
Hello, up to Fedora 15 including, there was ipv6 as loadable kernel
module and was not problem disable/not load it. But recent F15 and
F16 kernels have IPV6 support compiled in kernel, know anyone for
which reason? For IPv4-only sites (which is absolute majority) this
is unneeded...

in case you did not know about kerTeX distribution
by Antonio Olivares
Dear folks,
This is an FYI, there is a new lightweight simple TeX/LaTeX distrubution called KerTeX.
http://www.kergis.com/en/kertex.html
It is lightweight, requires few things like bison, flex, ed, lftp, all of which are available in Fedora. It does not have pdflatex, pdftex, dvipdfm, xdvi, but many packages can be written for the system. It is smaller than old TeTeX but it is maintained. Since Fedora still uses texlive2007 on fedora[except the ones using texlive-repos by J Novy
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/TeXLive ]
The packaging and patents are issues that hold TeXLive in Fedora back. KerTEX is BSD licensed and has no such issues. It is designed to be installed through a script ./get_mk_install, but it could be made into a package with some work. Users interested please download it and try it out. It is a small texing/latexing system that uses RISK framework.
Please test it out if you can, and maybe if the interest is there someone can try to package it and make it work independently even if texlive is installed.
NOTES:
User texifies, latexifies file, tex filename.tex, latex filename.tex, then runs
$ dvips -o filename.dvi filename.ps
or
$ dvips -t letter filename.dvi > filename.ps
then can convert to pdf using ps2pdf with ghostcript installed
$ ps2pdf filename.ps
For big projects and books, still the real TeXLive(from DVD) is the one for the job because the other one will be stopping somewhere because of a certain reason? Yes and TeXLive is very big [making it difficult to package and patents, nonfree stuff*, etc], so users that want a small portable tex/latex system [without such problems] can use kertex.
If installing kertex, program will look for libl.a, or libfl.a and will stop in case it does not find it, if flex is installed a link may do the job.
Regards,
Antonio
