firewalld and fail2ban?
by Richard Shaw
I use fail2ban to stop ssh intrusions but was curious about firewalld.
I can't find any information yet, but does anyone know if fail2ban
works with firewalld? Or does some feature of of firewalld make
fail2ban unnecessary?
Thanks,
Richard

Speaking of webm video
by Tom Horsley
Are there any tools available on fedora for encoding webm?
I see mention of patches for mencoder on the webm video site, but
it isn't clear if they have made it into the official mencoder
and already exist in the rpmfusion version (plus there is
always the insane complication of figuring out what parameters
to pass into any of the encode algorithms :-).

Hi,
I have been trying to open the following Powerpoint document at:
http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~rnugent/ULWG/spring2004/KernelKMeans.ppt
and I get the following error:
failed to open file '/tmp/ease/2604/0/Document.json': No such file or

Am I missing a library or something? Please post to the mailing list.
Many thanks,

Youtube video editing software
by Marko Vojinovic
Hi everyone!
I want to download some youtube videos (using youtube-dl), and I
need to edit each file by cutting some parts out and pasting the
remaining parts together. For example, starting at 4min0sec into the
video, remove 15sec, then continue to the end. Or, given two files,
concatenate them into one.
I need the simplest possible tool that will do this job. I know I
could use mencoder, but it seems to be an overkill for this simplistic
usecase. What I am looking for is a piece of software that even a
grandma can use, so to speak. No problems with patent-encumbered
software, rpmfusion-nonfree, etc.
Any suggestions?
TIA, :-)

building ppp from src rpm failed in f17
by Kevin Wilson
Hello,
I did the following on x86_64 fedora machine:
- downloaded ppp-2.4.5-22.fc17.src.rpm
ran: rpm -ivh ppp-2.4.5-22.fc17.src.rpm
then
rpmbuild -bp --target=x86_64 /root/rpmbuild/SPECS/ppp.spec
then
cd /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/ppp-2.4.5
./configure
make
got this error:
d chat; make all
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/ppp-2.4.5/chat'
cc -c -DTERMIOS -DSIGTYPE=void -UNO_SLEEP
-DFNDELAY=O_NDELAY -o chat.o chat.c
cc -pie -o chat chat.o
/bin/ld: chat.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.rodata' can not be
used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
chat.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [chat] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/ppp-2.4.5/chat'
make: *** [all] Error 2
why is this error ?
I tried, just out of interest, also
rpmbuild -bp --target=i686 /root/rpmbuild/SPECS/ppp.spec
and got:
cc -pie -o chat chat.o
/bin/ld: chat.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.rodata' can not be
used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
chat.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
Any ideas? this things should have work, or am I doing something wrong?

Kevin

Bluetooth 4.0 support - for Fitbit
by Robert Moskowitz
I am reading the Fitbit Unix thread on their forum. The latest Fitbit
base use Bluetooth 4.0 and it seems this is a problem with some of the
people on the list (and they don't say which distro they are working with).
So is Bluetooth 4.0 support in f17? And if not is it in f18?
Also it seems that Python 2 is used not Python 3 with warnings to
install the script in the Python 2 tree. Is this an issue or how is it
done in Fedora?
