Re: VirtualBox: After restoring fc17 NetworkManager cannot enable p2p1 automatically
by Dan Woizek
Hopefully with a better format now:
Dear fedora users,
I spend several hours on finding information about the following incident:
0. I can brows the internet on my fc17 guest using "VirtualBox v4.2.4 r81684"
1. on linux host I "Save the machine state" of fc17 guest
2. next day I restore fc17 guest
3. incident: NetworkManager applet cannot enable activated interface p2p1 automatically
4.
further investigation shows that using "/etc/init.d/network status"
hangs with command "/sbin/ip -o link show up"; also activation of
network via "systemctl restart NetworkManager.service" results in
"failed"
How reproducible:
# service network status
Actual
results:
Configured devices:
lo Wired_connection_1 p2p1
Currently active devices:
Expected results:
Configured devices:
lo Wired_connection_1
p2p1
Currently active devices:
lo p2p1
This looks similar to bug
"Bug 215074 - "/etc/init.d/network status" doesn't show active devices;
loopback goes away on APM suspend/resume". But this bug is already
closed. Maybe this needs to be reopened?
What do you recomend as a workaround because I would like to use the "Save the machine state" mode regularly?
Thanks!

Howto debug crashes in usb_modeswitch?
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
I am running F17+updates-testing, and for some time now I experience
frequent segfault crashes of usb_modeswitch when plugging in my UMTS
usb modem (ZTE MF652).
As ABRT doesn't detect the crash and manually triggering the
modeswitch usually doesn't crash I am a bit helpless.
Is there any way to debug the modeswitch triggered by systemd?
I've filed reports about both, usb_modewitch crashing as well as ABRT
not detecting the issue, however that didn't generate a lot of
interest:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=875511
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=872304
My experience with running fedora-beta or updates-testing is not the best.
I am prepared to file bugs when something goes wrong, however usually
nobody cares :/:
Thank you in advance, Clemens

I came across the same thing, before I found the trick, I searched my
homespace for the same program-name.desktop file as the launcher to
delete it. Hold down the ALT key and right-click, now can delete the
item.
Curse this gnome user-interface screwup of requiring the keyboard along
with the mouse.

I have downloaded the scrooge.webm video from youtube for the kids to watch.
How can I burn to DVD the xxx.webm format, k3b doesn't like that format.

Fedora 17 is behaving very unstable
by Luiz Emediato
Hi there,
I am finding a lot of problems with Fedora 17. I have installed the
DVD distribution
and after a few days I got a kernel panic after an upgrade.
Fortunately after a few days I could re-upgrade the kernel to a newer
version available.
However many system commands do not obey me.
For instance, it does not allow me to choose wallpaper, it is now complaining
about glibc with errors, why? Everything is fresh install. I have also
tried yum reinstall glibc
unsuccessfully.
It does not let me open System Settings now. All very strange.
By the way, default GNOME is horrible. I have successfully changed it
back to Gnome 2.
However the system seems to be still very unstable. I choose NAMED and
SMBD at Services
but after a reboot systems seems to lose the information so I have to
set it back up manually.
I used RH9 in the past which was wonderful, very stable. Then RHELv5
very stable too but RH
no longer allows academic subscription. So I stuck with Fedora14 which
worked fine too.
Now I am having all these troubles with v17. I have been using Linux
for over twelve years now
and do consider myself an expert with it as much as other Unix OS's.
Should I wait for the new release 18? Why 17 is so unstable? Would
anyone please advise?
Thanks
Luiz

F17, failsave, panel editing
by Frank Elsner
Hi,
I've put a launcher to the top panel (mail user agent) and cannot remove it.
How to edit panels under F17 in failsafe mode (GNOME 2 mode)?
Happy Xmas, Frank Elsner

Moving to Linode - referral code
by SternData
My VPS host has been down for about 3 hours. I'm getting my stuff
together to move to Linode of they're not back up by the time we get
back from brunch.
So, as payback to the community, I'd like to use someone's referral code
when I sign up. I assume it will put some credit onto your account.
Feel free to email me directly if you prefer.

copy corrupting last block of file?
by Tom Horsley
This looks suspiciously like a software problem of some kind:
I've got a file (a firmware update) I try to copy to an sdcard.
Two different copies now have shown as corrupted at the start
of the final 16K boundary of the file data:
zooty> cmp /zooty/public/S800CUpdate/firmware/firmware.bin /tmp/tom/bad-linux-firmware/firmware.bin
/zooty/public/S800CUpdate/firmware/firmware.bin /tmp/tom/bad-linux-firmware/firmware.bin differ: char 127041537, line 496168
zooty> cmp /zooty/public/S800CUpdate/firmware/firmware.bin /tmp/tom/firmware/firmware.bin
/zooty/public/S800CUpdate/firmware/firmware.bin /tmp/tom/firmware/firmware.bin differ: char 127041537, line 496168
That 127041537 value in hex is 0x7928001.
Worst yet, if I use rsync rather than cp to copy the file, lo and behold the
contents turn up identical!
Is the "cp" command busted? That would be insane.

grub2-mkconfig issue Fedora 16
by Michael D. Setzer II
Recently noticed that the kernels were not showing up in newest
to older in the boot screen after running grub2-mkconfig.
The .7 was being sorted before the .10.
Found a patch to the grub-mkconfig_lib file to correct the sorting.
version_find_latest ()
{
#patched (whole work is done by sort!):
echo $@ | tr ' ' '\n' | sort -Vr | head -1 | cat
#bad code! sorts wrong!
#local a=""
# for i in $@ ; do
# if version_test_gt "$i" "$a" ; then
# a="$i"
#fi
#done
#echo "$a"
}
Then it sorts correctly again. Seems to have been fixed in other
later releases, but not in Fedora 16.
