Do a memory test before upgrading to Fedora 15
by Birger Monsen
I think the new kernel uses memory differently compared to the kernels in F14.
One system I just upgraded consistently crashed with checksum failures on
the RPM packages during the actual install phase. In the end I found my F14
CD and ran memtest86. Massive (really massive) memory failures on a rather
new PC that had passed memtest86 just a few months ago when it was built. It
had been used with F14 without any big problems until now. Mostly running
armacycles and supertuxcart (it's a living room PC for the kids).
Since it had crashed halfway through upgrading X wouldn't start. I logged in
through ssh with X tunnelling and re-ran preupgrade after removing the
offending memory module. I then had to run package-cleanup --cleandupes
I would recommend running memtest86 prior to this upgrade just to be safe.
You may have defective memory you didn't know about. if you don't have a cd
handy, it should be as simple as installing memtest86+ and then run
memtest-setup to add it to the grub menu.

F14->F15 preupgrade fails
by Kevin Cummings
Today, I tried to upgrade my F14 test machine to F15.
Machine in question: HP Pavilion 7490 desktop
PIII w/512MB ram.
Intel (something old) graphics
1st, I downloaded and burned (to a CD-R) the Live Desktop i686 CD.
It boots in the CD drive and runs (in fallback mode).
I got my first look at Gnome 3. (oh boy)
2nd, I downloaded and burned the i386 install DVD to a DVD+RW.
When I tried to boot it (from the machines DVD drive) it
failed to boot. Strange as the CD boots from the CD drive.
(I'm about to try my x86_64 install DVD in this laptop just to
see if its a problem booting from DVD+RW disks....)
3rd, I ran preupgrade, which sat and churned, and downloaded a bunch of
packages, then announced it was ready to reboot. When I
rebooted, and selected the Upgrade to F15 entry, all I got was
a blinking flat cursor in the upper left of my monitor.
Nothing happens after that point. I can give the 3-fingered
salute to reboot the machine, and I can select one of the 3
installed F14 kernels and the machine will reboot (into F14).
Here are the grub entries for the pre-upgrade and F14:
> title Upgrade to Fedora 15 (Lovelock)
> kernel /boot/upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=f3299b81-9fc4-46eb-9189-a79591e894a1:/boot/upgrade/ks.cfg

> n_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us noiswmd
> initrd /boot/initramfs-2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.img
The other 2 F14 grub entries are similar to the one above.
Can someone tell me what's wrong with the F15 upgrade entry (why won't
it boot?) I've tried adding a root grub directive and a root= kernel
parameter entry, and neither of those changes makes a difference....
Do I need to add something? Do I need to change something?
As I look at the 3 files in /boot/upgrade, they are all chmod 644. As I
look at the kernel images in /boot, they are all chmod 755. Should the
/boot/upgrade/vmlinuz file be changed to 755?
Inquiring minds want to know why preupgrade won't work for me!
Thanks for any/all advice!

The list consists of all "normal" services. No idea what are the last ones.
Do you suggest to switch them all off? (this means also the normal ones like
sshd, auditd, iptables etc...)

Re: Why on the Earth GNOME Shell hiding Shutdown & Restart options

It is much better hidden than that. You pull down the user menu, there's
no such thing as Shutdown - there's Suspend. Shutdown only appears when
you hold the alt button. So yes, it's carefully hidden.

Support? Gnome needs no stinking support!

This is too funny, so I thought I´d share with you:
You Google "Gnome Support" and get back among the first results
"Gnome.org/support" so you click on it.
http://www.gnome.org/support/
"Ooooops. Something is not here.
The page you tried to access was not found."
The page (HTML document <TITLE>): "Nothing found for Support"
That says it all, right?. ;-)

redhat archive
by Matias Kreder
Hi,
I really don't know where to ask this question, but this may be a good
point to start.
Do you know who can check this for the redhat archive or where should
I ask? I'm trying to get these pretty old red hat .iso's and there is
nothing below 6.2.

Desktopswitcher and OpenOffice (F15)
by Roelof 'Ben' Kusters
I just installed F15, and am exited. Some may remember some of my
complaints regarding looks and wifi-workability for F14; all my wishes
seem to have come true. Well done developers; I'm a happy bunny. Learning
quickly though.
Two things though.
First: Is there a way to configure the desktop switcher so that it appears
every time I move my mouse to the right side of the screen? At the moment
the only way I can get it is through Applications, and then move the mouse
to the right... It is very possible I'm missing something. Would
appreciate any help with this.
Second: I fully understand why OpenOffice was dropped in favour of
LibreOffice. I will (probably) change in the future. However, at work we
use OpenOffice, and I would like to learn Gnome3 first, before battling
with a new office suite - and possible compatibility issues.
I installed F15 on my netbook with a live-usb. I went to the OOo website,
and downloaded the package. The install went apparently fine - no errors
were given, and when I try to install again, it mentions all has already
been installed. However, I can't find it. There's nothing but Evolution
under Activities -> Applications -> Office. Also with this I would
appreciate help.
Many thanks.
